Valentine's Day originated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early saints named Valentinus. Valentine's Day is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world.
Valentine's Day first became associated with romantic love in the 14th century. In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, candy, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. In Europe, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver's heart".
Suffice it to say that Valentine's Day is a day for love and lovers. On the day that we celebrate love we should look to see what the greatest lover of them all says about it. That greatest lover of them all is God. Love isn't just what God does it's who He is.
1 John 4:7-8 ESV Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. (Emphasis mine)
Let's see what the world's greatest lover says in His love letter (the Bible).
