David wrote Psalm 139 near the end of his life. He is looking back over all he has seen and done Saul, Goliath, Bathsheba, the dysfunction in his family and all the rest. This plasm is testimony of the grace of God. As you read the psalm think back over your life and as David did rejoice with thanksgiving that even though God knows all about us; the good and the bad he still loves us.
God knows all about us: “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. (v. 1).
God knows our actions: “You know when I sit and when I rise.” He knows the good and bad things we’ve done, our personal Goliaths and Bathshebas and everything in between.
He knows our thoughts: “you perceive my thoughts from afar..” He knows what you’re thinking at this very moment.
He knows everything we do in public and private: “You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. literally “all the paths I take, everywhere I have been and am going.”
He knows our words, so that before we speak our next word, he already knows what we are “Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely”. He knows what we say and what we mean by what we say.
And yet, despite all that he knows about us, he loves us and cares for us. “You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me.” His hand is upon us so that he will never lose us.
John 10:28-30 NIV I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
He will not abandon us, even when we abandon him. “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you”
In all the extremes of our lives God is there. From the highest times to the lowest, from the best to the worst, and everywhere in between.
God knows you to your core and still loves you.
Take a moment to think through your actions, words, activities, and times when you abandoned God or were at your lowest moments of sin.
When any guilt, sadness, or regret boils up, realize that God knows all of that to its deepest depth, and he removes that transgression from you as far as the east is from the west.
Psalms 103:8-12 NIV The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
