Each of the nations that reached prominence and then faded away went through the same sequence. They went from spiritual faith to great courage, from great courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, and from dependency into obscurity. The most interesting thing about these great nations is that whether that nation just collapsed or was overcome by a foreign power, they first fell apart from inside out.. The pattern has been the same throughout history no matter how strong the nation has been militarily.
For example, as the Roman Empire rose to greatness, they no doubt assumed they would be around for centuries to come. But they were crumbling on the inside. I believe the same is happening in America today. There’s moral decay on the inside.
Look at what’s happened in the United States in just the last 15 years. Divisions on race, gender, religion, politics, the wearing of masks, COVID-19 vaccinations, open schools, online schools, an insurrection, and attempted coup d'état January 6, 2021, I could go on and on. My point is that there are deep divisions in the country and even more important for us, in the Church. All those divisions I just mentioned also exist in the church.
So, here’s the question “Where is God? Why does He let these things happen? Why are we in such a state of chaos?” Here’s my answer to those and other questions:
We have turned our backs on God; we pushed Him out of our schools years ago and now our children have no Judeo/Christian ethics or background; we have vilified all the good and honorable things our country was founded on; we have hated Jesus Christ and his Church; we let our children grow up in a godless world without even caring; we have not protected the family institution, one man and one woman united for life; we have killed babies in the womb; we have turned blind eye to those who have fought for our country and our freedom; we have been taken advantage of by the very democracy we live in, letting corrupt officials make laws oppressing citizens and then voting them back into office year after year.
On the wall of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, DC, are these words from President Thomas Jefferson: “God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed a conviction that these liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just, that his justice cannot sleep forever.”
If we allow history to repeat itself the United States will never be conquered by another nation, but we will decay and fall from within. We need to get back to the true God, not just spirituality. We need to get back to the God that our founding fathers believed in when they established this nation: The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The God of love. The God who told us to love everyone no matter their color, their sex, their country, their religion.
Matthew 5:43-48 NIV “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Mark 12:29-31 NIV “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
1 John 4:8-12 NIV Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
We can’t pick and choose who to love. If you love God you love those He loves and He loves everybody.
John 3:16 NIV For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Yes, we need to get back to the God who sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sin. We need to get back to the true and living God who can save America.
2 Chronicles 7:13-14 NIV “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Father,
We are living in a day unlike anything we have ever seen before. Chaos, confusion, and turmoil has been stirring in the hearts of so many people.
We trust that justice belongs in Your hand, but we also trust that You have a great plan for us to see hearts transformed and lives changed. I also pray those who think they are in ‘control’ will realize only God and the Father has the right to control everything and everything on Earth.
Jesus, thank You for Your mercy that was displayed upon the cross that has given those who call upon Your name and trust in you for forgiveness and new life. We want to be a part of Your great redemptive plan on earth.
Help us fix our eyes on Christ when we are tempted to only look at the problems around us. We are asking that You would give us the boldness to proclaim the only solution to what our world is experiencing and that is Your glorious Gospel!
