WHEN BETRAYED
Stress and anxiety can take a toll on one’s body. According to WebMD, emotional stress can cause dizziness, a fast heartbeat, the inability to concentrate, headaches, muscle tension, and even short-term memory loss. If not handled well, high emotional stress can have a lasting negative impact.
David was in a state of extreme stress. He had experienced danger and persecution.
Psalms 55:3 NLT My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down.
His enemies prowled the streets looking for an opportunity to attack him.
Psalms 55:9-11 NLT Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets.
Most poignantly, one of his enemies had been at one time a close friend.
Psalms 55:13-14 NLT Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God.
This situation has taken a physical toll on David.
Psalms 55:4-5 NLT My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking.
David’s first impulse was to run.
Psalms 55:6-7 NLT Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude
Perhaps you have been in a situation where your greatest desire was to flee. David’s heart expressed not the courage of the man who had faced down giants but the timidity of a bird. His second impulse was to turn his anxiety over to God. Although David’s circumstances looked grim, God has not changed.
Psalms 55:19 NLT God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God.
He assured himself that God heard his cry for help. He knew that God would ultimately judge the wicked.
Psalms 55:17, 23 NLT Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the Lord hears my voice. But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me.
This psalm was David’s way of casting his cares on the Lord.
Psalms 55:22 NLT Give your burdens to the Lord , and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
