It is believed that David wrote this Psalm after the Lord had rescued him from his enemies especially Saul.
Most of us, unlike David may not have physical enemies who are out to kill us, but if you are a Christian you do have a very powerful enemy who is out to destroy you. That destruction, which may include physical death, is intended to disrupt your relationship with Jesus which He designed to be a relationship of peace.
Your enemy is Satan and his greatest weapon is to attack your mind.
1 Peter 5:8 NLT Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
He attacks your mind in order to cause you to doubt yourself, to flood your mind with guilt, to inflict you with fear, to cause you to question your salvation. It's a battle for your mind. It's spiritual warfare.
“This is all a nice idea but you’ll never change. You’ll never get through a day without getting angry, you’ll never kick the negative self-talk, you’ll never beat the depression, anxiety, the pronograhy. You can’t beat this. This is too much for you.”
In and of yourself, in your own strength and in your own power, those statements may be true. Positive thinking is important, so is watching how you speak and changing your habits, but if the self-help tools are all you have it is only self-help and they are no match against your enemy.
There is something much better than self-help—there’s God’s help. You are no match for the war you are facing. Don’t try to fight these battles in your own strength. God said;
Isaiah 54:17 NKJV No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord , And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the Lord .
We often devote more time fighting devils and demons, and talking about devils and demons, than we talk about the power and eternal majesty of our God.
We get agitated and excited with heated emotion instead of resting in God’s Word and in who God is. If we're obsessed with devil bashing, we may want take a step back.
Psalms 46:10 NLT “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
You are more powerful than you think...but not on your own.
Here's what David said in Psalm 18;
Psalms 18:34-45 NLT He trains my hands for battle; he strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great. You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. I chased my enemies and caught them; I did not stop until they were conquered. I struck them down so they could not get up; they fell beneath my feet. You have armed me with strength for the battle; you have subdued my enemies under my feet. You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. They called for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the Lord , but he refused to answer. I ground them as fine as dust in the wind. I swept them into the gutter like dirt. You gave me victory over my accusers. You appointed me ruler over nations; people I don’t even know now serve me. As soon as they hear of me, they submit; foreign nations cringe before me. They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds.
He’s got the power, you just need to ask for it. give you the Holy Spirit if you ask Him to.
