Here in the United States, this month, the two major political parties are holding their national conventions. At these conventions they are nominating their candidates to run for the office of President of the United States. The election for President as well as elections for many other political offices from the United States Congress, down to the council person in the smallest hamlet. During the conventions and from now on, until election day, we will hear for the candidates the reasons that they believe we should vote for them. Some of them will be conservatives, some liberals, and some in the middle, but each one will present their positions on many issues and how they will govern and serve us, after all we are electing them to serve.
I have my own thoughts of who I will vote for as I’m sure you do. It’s even possible that I will change my mind about who I will support for particular offices between now and election day and I suspect that’s the case with you too. I’m not going to tell you who to vote for and am not going to give you my views on any candidate or their positions. What I am going to share with you what David, the king of Israel that God called a man after His own heart, wrote about how he intended to rule.
In Psalm 101 David identified the principles that he was going to use as he governed. He expressed these intentions in the form of promises to God. If the people we elect will follow these principles it doesn’t matter who becomes President or City Council Member we will be governed with fairness the way that God would have it.

In the first four verses David shares his personal resolutions. He promises that he will be merciful and just. He also resolves to stay away from wickedness of any kind.
In the remainder of the Psalm, David gives his official intentions. Based on his promise of mercy and justice he goes on to describe the kind of people that he will favor in his government and those that he will shun. He will show favor the the people who have integrity but for those who have no integrityt , to put it in the words of The Wycliffe Bible Commentary “Slanderers and wicked-doers he will destroy, and he will deny his favor to the proud, to the deceitful, and to liars. In so doing he will cleanse the royal court, the royal city—Jerusalem, and the entire land.”
Psalm 101:1-8 (NLT)1 I will sing of your love and justice, LORD. I will praise you with songs.2 I will be careful to live a blameless life— when will you come to help me? I will lead a life of integrity in my own home.3 I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them.4 I will reject perverse ideas and stay away from every evil.5 I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride.6 I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me.7 I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence.8 My daily task will be to ferret out the wicked and free the city of the LORD from their grip.
No matter who we elect in November, or at any other time, my prayer is that those we do elect rule as David promised God that he would rule. Don’t leave it to others to elect leaders for you, get out and vote it’s too important to not vote!!!
