The idea is, that someone had been with them, and had delivered them, and the attacks were of such ferocity that only God was the only one who could have possibly delivered them. The importance of of this Psalm to us today is that when we encounter, what appear to be insurmountable obstacles we can know that we too will be delivered by the same God who delivered the Jewish pilgrims as they traveled to the temple.
Psalm 124:1-8 (NLT)1 What if the LORD had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat:
2 What if the LORD had not been on our side when people attacked us?3 They would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger.4 The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us.5 Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed our very lives.6 Praise the LORD, who did not let their teeth tear us apart!7 We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap. The trap is broken, and we are free!8 Our help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
"If It Had Not Been For The Lord On My Side"
- by Helen Baylor
[Chorus:]
If it had not been for the Lord on my side
Where would I be? Where would I be?
If it had not been for the Lord on my side
Where would I be? Where would I be?
[verse 1:]
He kept my enemies away
He let the sun shine through a cloudy day
Oh, he wrapped me in the cradle of his arms
When he knew I'd been battered and torn,
So...
[chorus]
[verse 2:]
He never left me all alone
He gave me peace and joy I've never known
He answered when I knelt down to pray
And in victory, the Lord showed me the way
[Chorus]
