The Holy Spirit woke me up again early this morning to write a follow-up post.
Be Wise
God tells us in His Word, the Bible, to be wise.
Proverbs 4:6 (HCSB)6 Don’t abandon wisdom, and she will watch over you; love her, and she will guard you.
Ecclesiastes 2:26 (HCSB)26 For to the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy, but to the sinner He gives the task of gathering and accumulating in order to give to the one who is pleasing in God’s sight. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Matthew 10:16 (KJV)16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
James 1:5 (HCSB)5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.
Proverbs 9:10 (HCSB)10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Fear God Only
Fear - : to be afraid of (something or someone): to expect or worry about (something bad or unpleasant) : to be afraid and worried
The Bible tells us to fear only God. Do not be afraid of man, who can just kill the body, or Satan because he can’t do anything to the believer without God’s permission;
Matthew 10:28 (HCSB)28 Don’t fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul; rather, fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Job 2:4-6 (HCSB)4 “Skin for skin!” Satan answered the LORD. “A man will give up everything he owns in exchange for his life.5 But stretch out Your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”6 “Very well,” the LORD told Satan, “he is in your power; only spare his life.”
Satan doesn’t even have the power to destroy men in hell, in fact he will be punished there.
Revelation 20:10 (HCSB)10 The Devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet are, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Fear paralyzes and controls us, trying to hinder us or dictate every move and decision we make. Jesus gave His life to set us free from sin, but also from fear.
Galatians 5:1 (HCSB)1 Christ has liberated us to be free. Stand firm then and don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery.
2 Timothy 1:7 (HCSB)7 For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.
John 10:10 (HCSB)10 A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.
We know that God loves us.
1 John 4:8 (HCSB)8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
We are to love God back.
Luke 10:27 (HCSB)27 He answered: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.
1 John 5:3-5 (HCSB)3 For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. Now His commands are not a burden,4 because whatever has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith.5 And who is the one who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
We say that we believe that love drives away fear.
1 John 4:17-19 (HCSB)17 In this, love is perfected with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, for we are as He is in this world.18 There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. So the one who fears has not reached perfection in love.19 We love because He first loved us.
Love becomes a force working in us. It causes us to have boldness in the day of judgment. 4:17.
Our love. The text literally reads the love with us. It is the love which God, who is love, has produced in us through begetting us and placing his spirit in us. Boldness in the day of judgment. The believer who has perfected God's love in his earthly life will be able to approach the judgment seat of Christ without any shame. Such assurance is not presumption, because as he is, so are we in this world. The ground of boldness is our present likeness to Christ in this life, and particularly, according to this context, our likeness in love. It casts out fear. 4:18.The thought of boldness brings to mind its opposite, fear. Since love seeks the highest good of another, fear, which is shrinking from another, cannot be a part of love. Torment. Better, punishment. - The Wycliffe Bible Commentary.
This post is not against Islamic extremism, it’s not about the struggle between Christians and Muslims. It’s about fear and the fact that we are not to fear. Yes we are told to be wise. This means that we should always be aware of our surroundings. If we are suspicious of anything or anybody (this doesn’t mean everything and everybody, use wisdom and pray for discernment) we should report it to the authorities. Trust in the promises of God to protect us. Don’t become a prisoner of fear. When you feel yourself becoming afraid remember these things from my earlier post;
God will help you
Isaiah 41:13 (HCSB)13 For I, Yahweh your God, hold your right hand and say to you: Do not fear, I will help you.
God knows you by name
Isaiah 41:13 (HCSB)13 For I, Yahweh your God, hold your right hand and say to you: Do not fear, I will help you.
God can do marvelous things
Joel 2:21 (HCSB)21 Don’t be afraid, land; rejoice and be glad, for the LORD has done great things.
God did give not you a spirit of fear
2 Timothy 1:7 (HCSB)7 For God has not given us a spirit of fearfulness, but one of power, love, and sound judgment.
God will give you peace
Philippians 4:6 (HCSB)6 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
God is your refuge
Psalm 46:1-3 (HCSB)1 God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found in times of trouble.
2 Therefore we will not be afraid, though the earth trembles and the mountains topple into the depths of the seas,3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with its turmoil.Selah
Here are more reasons
No one can harm you beyond what God allows
Hebrews 13:6 (HCSB)6 Therefore, we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
God is for you
Romans 8:31 (HCSB)31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
You have the Spirit of God in you
1 John 4:4 (HCSB)4 You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
Fear not and trust God
Psalm 91:1-16 (HCSB)1 The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty.2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”3 He Himself will deliver you from the hunter’s net, from the destructive plague. 4 He will cover you with His feathers; you will take refuge under His wings. His faithfulness will be a protective shield.5 You will not fear the terror of the night, the arrow that flies by day, 6 the plague that stalks in darkness, or the pestilence that ravages at noon.7 Though a thousand fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, the pestilence will not reach you.8 You will only see it with your eyes and witness the punishment of the wicked.9 Because you have made the LORD—my refuge, the Most High—your dwelling place,10 no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent.11 For He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways.12 They will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the young lion and the serpent.14 Because he is lovingly devoted to Me, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he knows My name.15 When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will rescue him and give him honor.16 I will satisfy him with a long life and show him My salvation.
We are living in tumultuous times where things are happening that cause us to be concerned, however, our concerns should not lead us to fear, but rather, our concerns should lead us back to our God.
