These are the notes to my presentation of the manifestation of Unfaithfulness/Adultery .
The audio recording of the presentation is at the end of these notes.
Spirit of Whoredoms Manifestations - Unfaithfulness/Adultery
Unfaithfulness -
- not faithful; false to duty, obligation, or promises; faithless; disloyal.
- not sexually faithful to a spouse or lover.
- not accurate or complete; inexact:
Adultery - voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not his or her spouse.
An adulterer was a man who had illicit intercourse with a married or a betrothed woman, and such a woman was an adulteress. Adultery was once regarded as a great social wrong, as well as a great sin.
An adulterer is someone who is unfaithful.
I was given two passages of scripture. One which deals with conjugal infidelity (relating to marriage or the relationship of a married couple) and the other spiritual unfaithfulness or adultery.
First the conjugal infidelity:
Proverbs 5:1-23 (ESV)1 My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding,2 that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge.3 For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil,
4 but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.5 Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol;6 she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it.7 And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth.8 Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house,9 lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless,10 lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner,11 and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed,12 and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof!13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors.14 I am at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.”15 Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well.16 Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets?17 Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you.18 Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth,19 a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love.20 Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?
Proverbs 5:15-20 (NLT2)15 Drink water from your own well— share your love only with your wife.16 Why spill the water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone?17 You should reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers.18 Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth.19 She is a loving deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love.20 Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman, or fondle the breasts or fondle the breasts of a promiscuous woman.
Proverbs 6:26-29 (NLT2)26 For a prostitute will bring you to poverty, but sleeping with another man’s wife will cost you your life.27 Can a man scoop a flame into his lap and not have his clothes catch on fire?28 Can he walk on hot coals and not blister his feet?29 So it is with the man who sleeps with another man’s wife. He who embraces her will not go unpunished.
Proverbs 6:32-35 (NLT2)32 But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys himself.33 He will be wounded and disgraced. His shame will never be erased.34 For the woman’s jealous husband will be furious, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.35 He will accept no compensation, nor be satisfied with a payoff of any size.
Now let’s look at spiritual unfaithfulness or spiritual adultery.
Idolatry, covetousness, and apostasy, which is the abandonment or renunciation of a religious or political belief, are spoken of as spiritual adultery.
Ezekiel 16:15, 28-29 (NLT2)15 “But you thought your fame and beauty were your own. So you gave yourself as a prostitute to every man who came along. Your beauty was theirs for the asking. 28 You have prostituted yourself with the Assyrians, too. It seems you can never find enough new lovers! And after your prostitution there, you still were not satisfied.29 You added to your lovers by embracing Babylonia, the land of merchants, but you still weren’t satisfied.
Ezekiel 16:32 (NLT2)32 Yes, you are an adulterous wife who takes in strangers instead of her own husband.
To know what Ezekiel is talking about we have to go back to the beginning of chapter 16
Ezekiel 16:1-14 (NKJV)1 Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,2 "Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations,3 and say, 'Thus says the Lord GOD to Jerusalem: "Your birth and your nativity are from the land of Canaan; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.4 As for your nativity, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water to cleanse you; you were not rubbed with salt nor wrapped in swaddling cloths.5 No eye pitied you, to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were thrown out into the open field, when you yourself were loathed on the day you were born.6 "And when I passed by you and saw you struggling in your own blood, I said to you in your blood, 'Live!' Yes, I said to you in your blood, 'Live!'7 I made you thrive like a plant in the field; and you grew, matured, and became very beautiful. Your breasts were formed, your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.8 When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine," says the Lord GOD.9 Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil.10 I clothed you in embroidered cloth and gave you sandals of badger skin; I clothed you with fine linen and covered you with silk.11 I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your wrists, and a chain on your neck.12 And I put a jewel in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.13 Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate pastry of fine flour, honey, and oil. You were exceedingly beautiful, and succeeded to royalty.14 Your fame went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through My splendor which I had bestowed on you," says the Lord GOD.
The first seven verses God is telling them through Ezekiel of what the nation of Israel was like before He rescued them and made them a nation. Israel was like a new born baby. That had been deserted and God came along and cared for them
Ezekiel 16:4-7 (NKJV)4 As for your nativity, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water to cleanse you; you were not rubbed with salt nor wrapped in swaddling cloths.5 No eye pitied you, to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were thrown out into the open field, when you yourself were loathed on the day you were born.6 "And when I passed by you and saw you struggling in your own blood, I said to you in your blood, 'Live!' Yes, I said to you in your blood, 'Live!'7 I made you thrive like a plant in the field; and you grew, matured, and became very beautiful. Your breasts were formed, your hair grew, but you were naked and bare.
Then at verse 8 He married her and clothed and cared for her.
Ezekiel 16:8-14 (NKJV)8 When I passed by you again and looked upon you, indeed your time was the time of love; so I spread My wing over you and covered your nakedness. Yes, I swore an oath to you and entered into a covenant with you, and you became Mine," says the Lord GOD. (read Ruth chapter 3 to see the symbolism) 9 Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil.10 I clothed you in embroidered cloth and gave you sandals of badger skin; I clothed you with fine linen and covered you with silk.11 I adorned you with ornaments, put bracelets on your wrists, and a chain on your neck.12 And I put a jewel in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.13 Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate pastry of fine flour, honey, and oil. You were exceedingly beautiful, and succeeded to royalty.14 Your fame went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through My splendor which I had bestowed on you," says the Lord GOD.
But after God taking care of them from birth they became conceited because the surrounding nations flattered her and she then trusted in her beauty to get her what she wanted and needed. Then it got good to her and God called her a harlot, or prostitute or whore.
Ezekiel 16:28 (NKJV)28 You also played the harlot with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable; indeed you played the harlot with them and still were not satisfied.
It wasn’t just the Assyrians either. Read verses 23-29 it included the Egyptians, the Chaldeans, and other surrounding nations. Also read some of the other prophets to see their unfaithfulness.
Ezekiel, Hosa, and the other prophets are talking about spiritual unfaithfulness, and adultery’ and warning about that.
God uses Gomer, Hosea’s wife, as a symbol of Israel's adultery or halortry.
Hosea 1:2-3 ESV When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, "Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord ." So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.
The Jews were called an adulterous generation by Jesus.
Matthew 12:38-39 (NKJV)38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from You."39 But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
Let’s see if we can look at both spiritual and conjugal unfaithfulness as similar things.
Galatians 5:19 CEV People's desires make them give in to immoral ways, filthy thoughts, and shameful deeds.
Usually, we think of "having faith" as simply "trusting, believing." And while that is true, it can be incomplete if we forget that, as Christians, we are also joined to Christ as our Bridegroom.
All who have trusted the Lord and received salvation by grace through faith are collectively His Bride. This analogy exists in several New Testament passages. Paul gives believers instructions about marriage, saying, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”
Ephesians 5:25 ESV Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Paul also refers to the church as a virgin waiting for her bridegroom.
2 Corinthians 11:2 ESV For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
Paul uses the relationship between Christ and the church as an example of the importance of wives’ submission to their husbands.
Ephesians 5:24 ESV Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
In other words, there is a real relationship with Him—the living Christ—that is at stake. And although we never have a legitimate cause to do so, we often break faith with and betray our faithful Bridegroom.
When we don”t exhibit love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control but show immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, it is because we have broken faith with Him and are in the state of unfaithfulness.
To help us keep those desires under control we should stay “filled with the Holy Spirit” That means allow the Holy Spirit to control us.
