The belief that God is distant, only accessible in a temple or a future heaven, is a misunderstanding that robs us of daily intimacy. In the Old Testament, God's presence was symbolized by the Ark of the Covenant, veiled and guarded. But through the transformative work of Jesus Christ, that veil was torn, signifying a new era of direct access for all who believe.
Matthew 27:50-51 NLT [50] Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. [51] At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart,
Mark 15:37-38 NLT [37] Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. [38] And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
Luke 23:45 NLT The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle.
The Invitation to Draw Near
Scripture is filled with invitations to experience God right now. This is not a passive waiting game; it's an active, daily choice to seek Him.
James 4:8 NLT Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. (emphasis mine)
Think of being in God's presence not as a physical location, but as a state of awareness and spiritual alignment. It’s where our focus, our will, and our priorities intersect with His. It is in this place that we find the peace that surpasses all understanding, the guidance we need, and the strength to face any challenge.
Philippians 4:6-7 NLT [6] Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. [7] Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. (emphasis mine)
Where Can We Find His Presence?
The Bible makes it clear that His presence is near, active, and accessible:
God's Presence is Near
We don't have to search in far-off lands or wait for special occasions to connect with God; He has made Himself immediately available to anyone who sincerely calls out to Him.
Psalms 145:18-19 NLT [18] The Lord is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. [19] He grants the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cries for help and rescues them.
The Apostle Paul preached to philosophers in Athens, explaining that God is the Creator of all mankind, and His design was always for humanity to seek and find Him, because He is not far from any single person.
Acts of the Apostles 17:27-28 NLT [27] “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. [28] For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ (emphasis mine)
Our closeness to God is often an act of our own wil a powerful call to action, offering a reciprocal promise: as we take steps toward Him in faith and repentance, He instantly moves toward us.
James 4:8 NLT Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
Because of Christ, the barrier separating us from God has been permanently removed. We are invited to enter God's throne room, the place of highest authority, not in fear, but with boldness to receive what we need.
Hebrews 4:16 NLT [16] So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
In His final words before His crucifixion, Jesus promised His followers a new, permanent form of His presence: the Holy Spirit, who would live in them, actively guiding and empowering their lives.
John 14:16-17 NLT [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. [17] He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.
The power that brought Jesus back from the dead is now at work inside every believer. This active, indwelling presence is able to accomplish miraculous things in our lives that far exceed our largest requests or most hopeful imagination.
Ephesians 3:20 NLT[20] Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. (emphasis mine)
When we work to show the results of our salvation—when we submit ourselves to God's commands—we are not doing it in our own strength. The true source of our effort, desire, and ability to obey is the active, internal presence of God moving us from within.
Philippians 2:12-13 NLT [12] Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. [13] For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. (emphasis mine)
God's Presence is Accessible through Christ
The sacrificial act of Jesus shattered the old boundary, granting all who believe unhindered and permanent access to God's presence, replacing the temporary, veiled access of the Temple.
Hebrews 10:19-22 NLT[19] And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. [20] By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. [21] And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, [22] let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.
Our confidence before God is not based on our own merit but entirely on what Christ has done. Through our faith in Him, we stand securely, free from fear or hesitation, welcomed directly into God's presence.
Ephesians 3:12-13 NLT [12] Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and confidently into God’s presence. [13] So please don’t lose heart because of my trials here. I am suffering for you, so you should feel honored. (emphasis mine)
God is accessible Through Prayer
The ultimate joy of the Christian life is the promise that God will eternally show us the path to life, with the crowning reward being the unceasing, ecstatic experience of being with Him.
Psalms 16:11 NLT You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.
Jesus instructed His followers that prayer is a direct, private communication with the Father, emphasizing that we don't need a public intermediary to access Him.
Matthew 6:6 NLT [6] But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.
