At its core, authority is the recognized right to command, determine, judge, or enforce obedience. It isn’t merely about having the power to force someone to do something; it is about having the legitimate, rightful ownership to establish rules and define truth.
In human terms, authority is always delegated and limited. A government has authority within its borders; a judge has authority within a courtroom; a parent has authority within a home. Because human authority is limited, it is also flawed, subject to change, and temporary.
Why God is the Final Authority
If human authority is conditional, where does absolute authority rest? The scriptures reveal that God doesn’t just have authority; He is the final Authority. The rationale for His ultimate sovereignty rests on three unshakeable pillars:
Psalms 24:1 NIV The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;
Malachi 3:6 NIV I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed. (emphasis mine)
