Supporting a leader who struggles to love is not about partisan loyalty; it is about aligning our priorities with God’s will and maintaining a foundation of faith that is unshakeable, even when the "powers that be" are faltering.
1. Distinguish Between the Office and the Individual
Scripture is remarkably clear that authority is not an accident of history, but a matter of divine providence.
Romans 13:1 NIV Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
We can support the stability of our government and the dignity of the office while simultaneously grieving the actions of the person holding it. We honor the "king" because we fear the God who placed them there, even when the leader’s personal conduct fails to reflect the heart of Christ.
1 Peter 2:17 NLT Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king.
2. Radical Prayer Over Radical Protest
It is easy to vent on social media, but it is spiritual work to fall on our knees. Here is what Scripture says.
1 Timothy 2:1-2 NLT [1] I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. [2] Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.
When a leader is unloving, they are in desperate need of a heart transformation that only the Holy Spirit can provide. Praying for them isn't an endorsement of their platform; it is an act of spiritual warfare, asking God to turn the "king's heart" like a stream of water toward justice and mercy.
Proverbs 21:1 NLT The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the Lord; he guides it wherever he pleases.
3. Be the "Salt" Where the Leader is Not
If a leader refuses to love, the burden falls more heavily on the Church to fill that vacuum. Jesus called us to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
Matthew 5:13-14 NLT [13] “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. [14] “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
When government rhetoric is cold, our local communities should be warm. When policies neglect the vulnerable, our ministries should be overflowing with care. Our support for the "common good" of our city or nation is often best expressed by out-loving the failures of our leadership.
4. Speak Truth with Gentleness
Supporting a leader does not mean remaining silent in the face of sin. However, our "support" is best shown by holding them to the standard of God’s Word with the right spirit.
Galatians 6:1 NLT [1] Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.
As citizens of heaven first, we should be the ones calling for civility, dignity, and love in the public square, serving as a conscience to those in power rather than just another angry voice in the crowd.
Philippians 3:18-20 NLT [18] For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. [19] They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth. [20] But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. (emphasis mine)
5. Trust the Ultimate Sovereign
Finally, we must remember that our foundation is not built on the shifting sands of local or national elections. Whether a leader is a "servant" like David or a "tool" like Nebuchadnezzar, God is in control. By keeping our eyes on the Kingdom of God, we can navigate political disappointment without losing our capacity to love. We support our leaders best when we remind them—through our actions and our prayers—that they are accountable to a higher Power whose law is Love.
