Psalms 73:3-5 NIV For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.
The truth is, you may never see earthly justice for the wrongs committed against you. We live in a fallen world where justice is often imperfect or non-existent. But our hope is not in the flawed systems of this world; it is in a righteous God who promises a day of ultimate reckoning.
Romans 12:17-19 NIV Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
That day of reckoning is called Judgment Day. On that day, every person will stand before Christ. The Scriptures are clear about this.
Hebrews 9:27 NIV Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment
For unbelievers, this will be a terrifying day of accountability, a judgment of punishment for their sins and rejection of Christ.
Romans 2:5-8 NIV But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. [8] But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 NLT And God will provide rest for you who are being persecuted and also for us when the Lord Jesus appears from heaven. He will come with his mighty angels, in flaming fire, bringing judgment on those who don’t know God and on those who refuse to obey the Good News of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power.
For believers, the judgment is different. We will be judged through Christ. Our salvation is not based on our works but on His grace.
2 Corinthians 5:6-10 NLT So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord. For we live by believing and not by seeing. Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.
This is not a judgment of condemnation, but a time when our works will be tested by fire, and those that glorify God will be rewarded.
1 Corinthians 3:11-15 NLT For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ. Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.
This truth provides an unshakable foundation for our faith. It allows us to release the burden of seeking vengeance and instead to focus on walking in God's will. We can rest in the assurance that God sees every wrong and that ultimate justice is guaranteed.
