Statistically, you’d be in the majority in America. According to the Pew Research Center, roughly 62% of Americans identify as Christian. Globally, that number sits at about 29% of the population (Interestingly, the total number of Christians is actually growing (reaching roughly 2.3 billion people), but they are not keeping pace with the overall global population growth) But here’s the thing: a label is just a label unless it’s built on a strong foundation.
But here’s the thing: a label is just a label unless it’s built on a strong foundation.
Identity isn't just about what we call ourselves; it’s about where we place our trust and how we align our lives.
The "Check-the-Box" Trap
When asked why they are a Christian, many people start listing their "credentials":
- "I’m in the pews every Sunday."
- "I read my Bible (mostly) every day."
- "I’m a good person; I don't cheat or steal."
- "I give back to the community."
These are all excellent things. But here’s the candid truth: none of them make you a Christian. Christianity isn't a self-improvement project or a quick fix of "doing better." It’s a complete internal overhaul.
Titus 3:5 HCSB He saved us — not by works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy — through the washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
What Does the Name Actually Mean?
The word "Christian" (from the Greek christianos) literally means a "follower of Christ." It only appears three times in the Bible.
Acts 11:25-26 HCSB[25] Then he went to Tarsus to search for Saul, [26] and when he found him he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught large numbers. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.
Acts 26:28 HCSB Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Are you going to persuade me to become a Christian so easily? ”
1 Peter 4:16 HCSB But if anyone suffers as a “Christian,” he should not be ashamed but should glorify God in having that name.
Back then, it wasn't just a category on a census; it was a description of people whose lives were so aligned with Jesus that others didn't know what else to call them.
Being a Christian means you have been born again.
John 3:3 HCSB Jesus replied, “I assure you: Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
It’s an acknowledgment that you can’t save yourself and that your only hope is the finished work of Jesus—His death for our sins and His resurrection.
1 Corinthians 15:3-6 HCSB [3] For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, [4] that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, [5] and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. [6] Then He appeared to over 500 brothers at one time; most of them are still alive, but some have fallen asleep.
The Importance of Regular Self-Reflection
Because faith is a continuous process and not a one-time event, the Bible actually encourages us to take a look under the hood.
2 Corinthians 13:5 HCSB Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith. Examine yourselves. Or do you yourselves not recognize that Jesus Christ is in you? — unless you fail the test.
This isn't about living in fear; it's about ensuring your priorities are still aligned with God’s will. Ask yourself the tough questions:
- Do I believe Jesus is God in the flesh?
- Do I acknowledge that my own "goodness" isn't enough to please a holy God?
- Is my Bible collecting dust, or is it my rule of truth?
- Do I seek the Lord's will, or am I just asking Him to bless my plans?
- Do I pray only when things go wrong, or is it a constant conversation?
It’s About Direction, Not Perfection
Does being a Christian mean you’ll never mess up again? Absolutely not. We all stumble. But the difference is in the response. It’s about a heart that is open to His guidance, even when we fail.
1 John 1:9-10 HCSB [9] If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [10] If we say, “We don’t have any sin,” we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
So... Are You a Christian?
Only you and God truly know the state of your foundation. If you realize today that you’ve been relying on your own efforts rather than trusting in Christ alone, you can change that right now. It starts with a simple, sincere alignment of your heart. Here’s a simple prayer that God will answer, every time.
"God, I know I’m a sinner and I can't save myself. I believe Jesus died and rose again for me. I’m putting my trust in Him alone as my Lord and Savior. Thank you for your mercy and for making me new. Amen."
If you made that commitment today, tell someone! Reach out, and leave a comment. The next step is finding a Bible-believing community where you can grow. Welcome to the family.
