Matthew 4:19 NLT Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”
The call to discipleship is a call to radical transformation. Jesus made it clear that following Him requires a reordering of our lives.
Luke 9:23-24 NLT [23] Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me. [24] If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.
This means putting aside our own desires and ambitions and surrendering to God's plan for us. It’s a costly commitment, but one that leads to a life of profound purpose.
So, why should we embrace this call to discipleship?
1. It is a direct command from Jesus.
The most compelling reason to pursue discipleship is that Jesus commanded it. The Great Commission is our marching orders.
Matthew 28:19-20 NLT [19] Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. [20] Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
This is not an optional suggestion for a select few; it is a universal calling for all who believe. Discipleship, therefore, is not just about our personal growth, but also about participating in God’s mission to the world.
2. It is how we grow in Christ-likeness.
Discipleship is the path to becoming more like Jesus. The Apostle Paul reminds us that "we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another"
2 Corinthians 3:18 NLT So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.
This transformation happens as we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, seek His guidance in prayer, and live in obedience to His commands. Jesus told the people who believed Him;
John 8:31-32 NLT [31] Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. [32] And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
3. It is how the world will know us.
Our love for one another is the key mark of a true disciple.
John 13:34-35 NLT [34] So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. [35] Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
As we love and serve each other within the community of faith, our lives become a powerful testimony to God's love, drawing others to Him.
4. It is how we bear lasting fruit.
Ultimately, the goal of discipleship is to bear much fruit for God's glory.
John 15:6-8 NLT [6] Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. [7] But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! [8] When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.
The fruit of the Spirit is the natural overflow of a life surrendered to Christ.
Galatians 5:22-23 NLT [22] But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
This fruit not only blesses our own lives but also has an enduring impact on those around us.
Discipleship is an incredible and challenging journey, but we don't walk it alone. We have the Holy Spirit as our guide and a community of believers to support and encourage us. Let's commit to this path, not just as a religious duty, but as the joyful and transformative purpose for which we were created.
