In the first two weeks of this blog series “Watch Your Mouth” I laid a heavy foundation. In the first post I said that the tongue contains a form of spiritual dynamite that can either clear a path for the Kingdom or blow our lives to pieces. In the second post, I dug beneath the surface to realize that our mouth is simply a loudspeaker for our heart. If we want to change the song coming out of the speakers, we have to let the Holy Spirit change the station playing deep inside the heart.
In this post I am taking a massive, ground-shifting step forward. We are moving from the internal condition of our souls to look at how our spoken words actually shape our external spiritual environment.
In the physical world, every single object has what scientists call a "resonant frequency"—a specific rate of vibration. If an opera singer hits the exact resonant frequency of a wine glass, the sheer force of that targeted sound wave will cause the glass to shatter.
In the spiritual realm, your voice carries its own frequency. Every time you open your mouth, you are broadcasting on one of two channels:
- The Frequency of the Flesh: Aligns with defeat, doubt, and despair, or
- The Frequency of Faith: Aligns with God’s sovereign promises, victory, and power.
Many of us wonder why we are experiencing a constant stream of defeat in our homes, our finances, our health, and our peace of mind. The sobering reality is that we are using our own mouths to validate and declare that defeat every single day.
Scripture shows us that God directly connects our voice to our victory.
Standing Before Fortified Walls
Following the death of Moses, Joshua was appointed by God to lead the nation of Israel into Canaan—the Promised Land. Jericho was the very first major city standing directly in their path. Geographically, it was a vital, strategic stronghold. If Israel could capture Jericho, they would successfully split the land right down the middle, preventing their enemies from uniting against them.
Jericho was famous for being a heavily fortified city-state. Think of ancient Middle Eastern fortresses like a layered defense: first, a giant dirt slope to slow down attackers, then a heavy stone retaining wall, and finally, towering brick walls capping off the entire structure.
Picture God’s people standing before this formidable fortress. Its massive stone walls loomed large, and by any human standard, victory was an absolute impossibility. It was at this exact moment that God handed Joshua a battle strategy that defied all conventional military logic:
Joshua 6:3-5 ESV You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days. Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.”
Woven directly into this unorthodox battle plan was a strict, highly specific command regarding their speech:
Joshua 6:10 ESV But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”
1. The Power of a Strategic Ceasefire
Consider the mechanics of this strategy: an army of over 600,000 soldiers had to march around the city walls in total, absolute silence for six days. No battle cries, no casual chatter, no whispering.
Why did God demand absolute silence?
Historically, the Israelites were notorious for grumbling, complaining, and vocalizing their fears the moment they faced an obstacle.
- Shortly after witnessing the miraculous parting of the Red Sea, they encountered bitter water at Marah and immediately grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”
Exodus 15:22-25 ESV] Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them, (emphasis mine)
- At the border of Canaan, after ten spies returned with a faithless report about giants, the people vocalized their despair, saying, “We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes...”
Numbers 13:32-33 ESV So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”
God knew His people. If Joshua had allowed them to talk while looking up at those intimidating walls for six days, they would have infected one another with doubt. The whispers would have started: "This isn't working," "Why are we just walking in circles?"
Maybe God demanded silence to prevent their fleshly tongues from sabotaging their supernatural victory. By enforcing complete vocal restraint, God ensured that when the command to "Shout!" finally came on the seventh day, the roar of the army would be an undivided, uncompromised expression of collective faith.
Sometimes, the very first step toward spiritual victory in your life is simply calling a ceasefire on your negative words. If your tongue isn't ready to speak words that align with God's promises, it is strategically better to say nothing at all.
2. The Legal Document of Your Confession
Our speech is not just intended for restriction; it is designed for activation. Look at the blueprint for our ultimate spiritual victory—our salvation:
Romans 10:8-10 ESV But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. (emphasis mine)
Belief in the heart is essential, but God requires that internal belief to be backed by a verbal declaration from the mouth.
In the ancient Greco-Roman world, verbally declaring "Jesus is Lord" was a dangerous, legally binding statement. It meant you were publicly declaring that Caesar was not your ultimate master. You were shifting your allegiance, your citizenship, and your submission to a higher King.
In the spiritual realm, your verbal confession functions like a legal document. True biblical confession isn't just making up positive thoughts or wishing upon a star. Confession means using your voice to say the exact same thing about your life that God says about your life. It is bringing your speech into absolute agreement with the King of Kings. When you speak the truth of God, you are enforcing the victory of the cross over your current circumstances.
3. Speak TO the Mountain, Not ABOUT the Mountain
Victory begins when you stop speaking about your problems to God, and you start speaking God to your problems. Jesus explicitly outlined this authority:
Mark 11:22-24 ESV] And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Notice that Jesus did not tell you to talk about the mountain to everyone who will listen. He commanded you to talk to the mountain on the authority of His name.
- When the enemy whispers that you are worthless or rejected, you speak to that mountain:
Psalm 139:14 ESV] I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
You declare that you are chosen, adopted, and blameless in His sight, and that you triumph by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony.
Ephesians 1:3-6 ESV] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,] even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,] to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
Revelation 12:11 ESV And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. (emphasis mine)
- When anxiety tells you that your future is ruined, you speak to that mountain:
Philippians 4:19-20 ESV] And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.
Then declare:
Time to Shout
Aligning our priorities and our words with God's will is a continuous process. It demands that we regularly evaluate the exact frequency we are broadcasting into our homes, our workplaces, and our own hearts.
On that seventh day at Jericho, when the trumpets sounded, the period of silence ended. Joshua gave the order: "Shout! For the Lord has given you the city!" When the people released their voices in perfect alignment with God's command, the frequency of faith shattered the stronghold:
Joshua 6:20 ESV So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they captured the city.
What walls are looming large in front of you today? Is it a wall of financial distress, a wall of broken relationships, or a wall of depression?
It is time to call a definitive ceasefire on reckless, defeatist talk. Stop using your vocal cords as a microphone for the enemy's agenda. Start using your voice to declare the victory that Jesus Christ has already won on your behalf. Bring your heart into alignment, open your mouth, and watch the walls fall.
Let's Pray Together
Sovereign Lord, You are the God who causes impossible walls to fall. Forgive us for the times we have used our voices to validate our fears rather than declare Your unchanging faithfulness. Today, we turn off the frequency of defeat and we tune our hearts into the frequency of faith. We confess with our mouths that Jesus Christ is Lord over our struggles, Lord over our relationships, and Lord over our futures. Give us the grace to speak Your promises directly to our problems. We thank You in advance for the walls that are going to fall. In the victorious name of Jesus, Amen.
