We live in a culture that idolizes strategy, predictability, and control. We like neat spreadsheets, clear 5-year plans, and logical next steps. But the kingdom of God rarely operates on human logic.
The Tension Between Understanding and Faith
When God calls us to something that counters human wisdom, our immediate reaction is often resistance. We want a blueprint before we take a step; God asks for a step before He reveals the blueprint.
Consider Abraham, who was told to leave his homeland for a place he had never seen. Consider Noah, who built an ark on dry land. Or Peter, who stepped out onto a storm-tossed sea simply because Jesus said, "Come." In every instance, obedience required stepping past the limits of human understanding.
Faith isn't the absence of doubt or confusion; it’s choosing to trust God's character when His directions don't line up with our current visibility.
"Because You Say So"
In Luke 5, after a long, exhausting night of catching nothing, Simon Peter was told by Jesus to throw his nets back into deep water. As a seasoned fisherman, Peter knew the conditions weren't right. Yet his response remains a masterclass in faith:
Luke 5:1-7 NIV One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
That phrase--because You say so—is the cornerstone of wholehearted obedience. It moves the foundation of our actions away from our own analysis and anchors it entirely on the authority of the One who speaks.
Shifting from Control to Trust
If you find yourself in a season where God’s guidance feels perplexing or daunting, ground your heart in these practical reminders:
- Shift Your Focus from the "Why" to the "Who": When you can't trace God's hand, you can always trust His heart. He doesn't owe us a full explanation, but He gives us His unfailing presence.
- Obedience Precedes Clarity: Full understanding rarely comes before action. Clarity usually reveals itself one step at a time as we walk forward in faith.
- Remember His Track Record: Reflect on past seasons where God led you through the unknown. He has always been faithful, and He won't stop being faithful now.
How is God inviting you to trust Him today, even if the full picture isn't clear yet?
A Prayer for Courageous Faith
Father, show us what You are calling us to do—simply because You say so. When we do not understand the roadmap, help us trust deeply in Your heart. Grant us the courage to step out in faith, knowing that You are infinitely worthy of our obedience. In Jesus' name. Amen.
