The Inspiration of Scripture
The Bible is not merely a collection of human writings but is divinely inspired. This means that while God used human authors, He superintended their writing so that every word was precisely what He intended to communicate. The Bible’s origin is divine, and its purpose is to equip us for a life aligned with God's will.
2 Timothy 3:14-17 NIV [14] But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, [15] and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. [16] All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, [17] so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
The Authority of God's Word
Because the Bible is inspired by God, it holds supreme authority in our lives. It is the final rule for all matters of faith and practice. We don't follow our own feelings or the fleeting trends of culture; we submit to the authority of God’s unchanging Word. Scripture has the power to speak directly into our lives, revealing truth and guiding our decisions.
Hebrews 4:12-13 NIV [12] For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. [13] Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
The Sufficiency and Infallibility of Scripture
The Bible is sufficient, meaning it contains everything we need to know about salvation and how to live a life that honors God. It provides a complete and reliable guide for our spiritual journey. It is also infallible, meaning it is trustworthy and without error in all that it affirms.
This truth gives us confidence that we are not building our faith on shifting sand but on the solid rock of God’s infallible Word.
Psalms 119:160 NIV All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.
The Importance of This Doctrine
Understanding the doctrine of God's Word helps us prioritize His voice above all others. It encourages us to regularly engage with the Scriptures, seeking to understand them and apply them to our lives. This is a continuous process of self-reflection and an openness to God’s guidance. By building our lives on the foundation of His truth, we can find clarity, peace, and purpose, knowing that we are following the path He has laid out for us.
