Philippians 4:6-7 NLT [6] Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. [7] Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Sometimes, we can't immediately remedy our financial situation, and that can be uncomfortable. Often the financial hurdles we face are a direct result of poor decisions. These are often the most challenging times to trust God to provide for us. In these situations, we must cling to His peace rather than getting swept away by our fears.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT [5] Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. [6] Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
One profound truth we can hold onto when anxiety about money creeps in is that as children of God, we are richly blessed because we belong to Him.
Hebrews 13:5-6 NLT [5] Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” [6] So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”
This world and its troubles will eventually pass away, but we have a secure home that God is preparing for us in Heaven. When overwhelmed by the temporary strain of financial needs, we can meditate on God’s now and forever provision.
Money is not evil but the love of it, the idolatry of it is what can lead us astray.
1 Timothy 6:10 NLT For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
In our money-obsessed culture, it can feel counterintuitive, even unwise, to release ourselves from the weighty responsibility of our finances. Yet, Jesus invites us to trust Him with our needs. We are warned that an undue love for money can pull us away from Jesus and open the door for evil to enter our lives.
Matthew 6:25-27 NLT [25] “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? [26] Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? [27] Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
Embracing God’s peace is a vital way to keep our hearts pure.
Judas’s love for cash tragically trumped his love for his Savior.
Matthew 26:14-16 NLT [14] Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests [15] and asked, “How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?” And they gave him thirty pieces of silver. [16] From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
John 12:4-6 NLT [4] But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, [5] “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” [6] Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself.
This is a powerful reminder that while we should be responsible and diligent with our resources, an excessive focus on accumulating all we feel we need can dangerously pull us away from our first love.
Psalms 37:16-17 NLT [16] It is better to be godly and have little than to be evil and rich. [17] For the strength of the wicked will be shattered, but the Lord takes care of the godly.
The greatest treasure we possess is our relationship with Jesus. At the end of our lives, knowing Jesus will matter infinitely more than anything we’ve accrued in our bank accounts. Let’s focus on righteous living and trust that God is good enough to provide everything else we need for this life. Embrace God’s peace and remember that God is our first love and ultimate provider, and we can absolutely trust Him.
