But somewhere along the way, the tightrope started to sway, and the effort it took to stay on left us exhausted and feeling distant from the very God we were trying so hard to please. We began to realize that our focus had shifted from being with God to doing for God, and the intimacy we longed for was replaced by a checklist mentality.
This realization led us on a journey of rediscovering what it truly means to have a relationship with God. A relationship rooted not in our achievements, but in His unwavering love and grace. It’s a shift from striving to simply being present with Him.
Psalms 46:10 NLT “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
This isn't a suggestion to be productive or busy in His name, but an invitation to quiet our hearts and minds, to recognize His sovereignty simply through our presence.
This shift also involves cultivating intimacy with God. Just as we nurture our earthly relationships through time spent together, vulnerability, and open communication, our relationship with God flourishes when we prioritize these same elements.
God promises and assures us that if we seek, we will find.
Jeremiah 29:13 NLT [13] If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.
A God presence-based spiritual life opens us up to genuine encounters with God.
When we release the need to control the outcome or impress Him with our efforts, we create space for Him to move in our lives in unexpected and powerful ways. Think of the disciples in the boat.
Mark 6:45-52 NLT [45] Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and head across the lake to Bethsaida, while he sent the people home. [46] After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. [47] Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. [48] He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, [49] but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. [50] They were all terrified when they saw him. But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!” [51] Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, [52] for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.
They were toiling at the oars, focused on their efforts against the wind, and didn't recognize Jesus walking on water until He was right there with them. Often, our striving blinds us to the miraculous encounters God wants o have with us amid our everyday lives.
This isn't to say that good works and service are unimportant. It’s just that, their motivation shifts. Instead of being driven by a need to earn God's love, they become a natural outflow of a heart that is already secure in His love and desires to reflect His goodness. Our actions become a response to His grace, not a prerequisite for it.
The journey from performance to presence is an ongoing one, filled with moments of both challenge and profound peace. It requires us to lay down the heavy burden of striving and to embrace the lightness of simply being loved by God. It’s an invitation to trade the exhausting treadmill of spiritual achievement for the refreshing wellspring of God's presence, where true intimacy and life-changing encounters await.
