But amidst the abundance of the harvest table, it is easy to overlook the greatest gift we have ever received—a gift that wasn't wrapped in shiny paper, but in stripes and scars.
This Thanksgiving, while I am grateful for the food on my plate, my deepest gratitude is reserved for a different kind of provision. This year, my heart cries out: "Thanks for the Cross."
The Gift We Didn't Ask For (But Desperately Needed)
In our modern culture, gifts are often things we put on a wish list. But the gift of salvation wasn't something we knew to ask for; it was something we desperately needed without realizing the depth of our poverty.
The Bible tells us that we were separated from God, spiritually bankrupt. Yet, in the most staggering act of generosity in history, God intervened.
Ephesians 2:8-10 ESV [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, [9] not a result of works, so that no one may boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
The Cross is the ultimate gift because it is unearned. You cannot bake enough pies, volunteer enough hours, or be "good enough" to merit it. It is pure, unadulterated grace delivered through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Remembering the Cost
When we receive a generous gift from a friend, our gratitude is often deepened when we realize the cost of the gift.
The turkey on our table came at a price, but the redemption of our souls came at an infinite cost. We cannot truly say "Thanks for the Cross" without remembering what happened there. It was the place where perfect love met perfect justice.
Romans 5:6-8 ESV [6] For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— [8] but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 Peter 2:24 ESV He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
The shadow of the Cross looms large over Thanksgiving because it is the gateway to true relationship with our Creator. Without the Cross, our blessings are merely temporary comforts. With the Cross, every temporary blessing points to an eternal Provider.
An Indescribable Gratitude
Therefore, how should we live on Thanksgiving Day, and every day? We should live in a state of perpetual thanksgiving.
When the temporary blessings fade—when the leftovers are gone and life gets difficult again—the gift of the Cross remains. It is an anchor for the soul and the foundation of an unshakable joy.
This Thursday, as you gather with loved ones, by all means, enjoy the feast. Thank God for the roof over your head. But take a moment in the quiet of your heart to look beyond the table to the hill of Calvary.
Let the amazing reality of that sacrifice sink in, and join me in offering up the only reasonable response to such overwhelming generosity.
2 Corinthians 9:15 ESV Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!
Heavenly Father,
We lift our eyes above the feast and fix our hearts upon the ultimate gift: the Cross of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Thank You for Your indescribable grace. Thank You that even when we were lost, Your love pursued us. Thank You for the sacrifice that paid the debt we could not pay, offering us not just temporary blessings, but eternal life and peace.
Help us to live every day in the light of this sacrifice. May our gratitude not fade when the holiday is over, but may it become the strong foundation of our lives and priorities. Give us the wisdom to seek Your will and the strength to follow Your guidance daily.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus, our Savior and our ultimate Thanksgiving.
Amen.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
