Ephesians 6:13-17 NIV [13] Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. [14] Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, [15] and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. [16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. [17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
This is not a static set of equipment, but a dynamic, spiritual posture. It requires a continuous process of regular self-reflection, a commitment to maintaining a strong foundation in faith, and an unwavering openness to God’s guidance. Over this series, we will explore how each piece of this divine kit allows us to align our priorities with God’s will.
The first piece of armor is the Belt of Truth the second piece is the Breastplate of Righteousness the third and the subject of this post are the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace.
Ephesians 6:15 NIV and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
The Soldier's Foundation
In the heat of spiritual warfare, the ground beneath us can often feel shaky. The pressures of life, the uncertainty of the future, and the direct attacks of the enemy are designed to make us slip and fall. The Armor of God is our divine equipment for stability. By maintaining a strong foundation in faith and aligning our priorities with God’s will, we find the balance necessary to stand our ground. This is not a one-time event but a continuous process of walking in openness to God’s guidance.
We often overlook the importance of footwear in battle. However, for a Roman legionary, his shoes (caligae) were a technological marvel. They were heavy-duty leather sandals with soles studded with iron nails. These nails acted like modern-day cleats, allowing the soldier to dig into the mud, climb slippery slopes, and—most importantly—stand his ground when a phalanx of enemies pushed against him. If a soldier lost his footing, he was as good as dead.
It is ironic that in the midst of the violence of war our stability comes from peace.
Peace as an Offensive Strategy
The "Gospel of Peace" provides two essential things for the spiritual warrior:
Vertical Peace: This is peace with God. Because of what Jesus has done, the war between us and our Creator is over. We are no longer enemies; we are children. This peace is the "cleat" that digs into the ground. When the enemy tries to push us back with fear or anxiety, the knowledge that we are at peace with the Almighty gives us the traction to stand firm.
Romans 5:1 NIV Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Horizontal Peace: This is the "peace of God" that transcends understanding. It is a calm that persists even when external circumstances are chaotic. Being "prepared" with this gospel means that we are ready to move. We aren't just standing still; we are prepared to carry this peace into a fractured and hurting world.
Philippians 4:4-7 NIV [4] Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! [5] Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. [6] Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. [7] And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.(emphasis mine).
Maintaining Your Footing
Spiritual warfare often manifests as a "slippery slope" of worry. We start with one anxious thought, and before we know it, we have lost our footing and are sliding into despair. Aligning our priorities with God’s will means intentionally choosing to "put on" this peace every morning.
Regular self-reflection helps us identify when we are starting to slip. Are you losing your peace over a situation you cannot control? That is a sign that you need to re-lace your spiritual shoes. By resting in the finished work of the Gospel, you gain the stability to withstand any push from the enemy and the readiness to advance God's Kingdom, no matter how rugged the terrain.
