This reality is particularly stark for believers. We may stand one moment and speak of love, grace, and forgiveness, and in the next, allow frustration or anger to lead us to sharp, hurtful words. The message from the book of James is clear and convicting.
James 3:10 NIV Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.
He reminds us that a spring cannot produce both fresh and bitter water. Our words are a direct reflection of what's in our hearts, and if we are to align our lives with God's will, our speech must reflect His nature.
Matthew 12:34 NIV You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. (emphasis mine)
We must examine our words, Are they a source of life or a source of pain? Do they point others to Christ, or do they push them away?
Ephesians 4:29 NIV Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Let's commit to a continuous journey of self-reflection, seeking to tame our tongues and use them for His glory. This isn't about being perfect, but about being intentional. It's about recognizing the power we hold in our speech and choosing to use it to build others up, to share truth in love, and to be a living testament to the transforming power of Christ. Our words are a gift, and when used wisely, they can be a powerful instrument of God's love in the world.
