Whether you're scrolling through online shops or navigating crowded brick-and-mortar stores, the pressure to buy has been steadily building since before Halloween. The underlying message is clear: happiness is a commodity, and it can be purchased.
But as believers, we are called to pause and remember the true source of all lasting goodness. It’s a vital re-centering that pushes back against the seasonal tide of consumerism and aligns our priorities with God's truth.
The Source of True Perfection
The Bible offers a beautiful counter-narrative to the marketing frenzy. It reminds us that every genuinely good thing we experience in life doesn't originate on a factory floor or a store shelf, but from God Himself.
James 1:16-17 NIV [16] Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. [17] Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
Remember this verse in the storm of holiday shopping. It reminds us that God is the constant, unchanging source of perfection. The gifts He gives are truly good—they are things like peace, hope, unconditional love, salvation, wisdom, and purpose. These are the gifts that last long after the wrapping paper is tossed and the credit card bill is paid.
Gifts Inspired by God's Character
If God is the ultimate Giver, then reflecting on His character can redefine how we approach "gifting." These non-material treasures are invaluable, cost nothing but attention and intention, and mirror the perfect love of the Father:
- Patience: Giving the gift of time without rushing or judgment, especially when interacting with family or navigating holiday stress.
- Presence: Offering undivided attention and truly listening to a loved one, setting aside distractions like phones or to-do lists.
- Forgiveness: Extending grace and letting go of past hurts or annoyances, reflecting God's ultimate act of reconciliation toward us.
- Encouragement: Speaking words of life and affirmation into someone's spirit, building them up with the hope found in Christ.
- Peace: Intentionally choosing to bring calm and stability to an environment or relationship, rather than adding to chaos or conflict.
- Service: Giving the gift of action by meeting a practical need for someone in your community or family.
Our Continuous Reflection
Instead of only asking, "What should I buy?", we can shift our focus to asking:
- What are the spiritual gifts God has placed in my life this year?
- How can I be a better reflection of God's perfect love to others?
- How can I simplify my spending and free up resources (time and money) to focus on the eternal rather than the temporary?
While there is nothing wrong with exchanging presents to show appreciation, let’s ensure our actions flow from a heart anchored in the fact that “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father…”. Let the commercial rush be a prompt to remember the one perfect gift that changes everything and that gift is Jesus Christ.
The greatest gift has already been given. Our job is simply to receive it, cherish it, and share it.
