John 14:12 NIV [12] Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
To the human mind, this sounds impossible. Jesus walked on water, multiplied bread to feed thousands, healed leprosy with a touch, and commanded Lazarus to come out of a four-day-old grave. How could any fallen, finite human being do "greater" works than the Sinless Son of God?
To solve this mystery, we must look at three specific biblical shifts: the shift in Scope, the shift in Source, and the shift in Subject.
1. The Shift in Scope: From Local to Global
During His earthly ministry, Jesus voluntarily limited Himself to a human body. He was "localized." He walked the dusty roads of Palestine, ministering primarily to the "lost sheep of Israel"
Matthew 15:24 NIV He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
The "greater works" Jesus spoke of refer to the geographic and numerical extent of the Gospel. Because Jesus went to the Father, He sent the Holy Spirit to indwell every believer. Suddenly, the "works" were no longer confined to one Man in one village.
John 14:26 NIV But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Through the Church, the works of Christ exploded across continents, languages, and centuries.
Matthew 28:19-20 NIV [19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
2. The Shift in Source: The Power of the Helper
Jesus, explicitly tied the ability to do these works to His departure.
John 16:7 NIV But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
He tells us it is to our advantage that He goes away so that the Helper (the Holy Spirit) can come. The "greater works" are not fueled by human ambition or talent; they are fueled by the Third Person of the Trinity living within us. When you pray for a neighbor or share the Gospel at work, you are acting as the "Body of Christ." The "work" is still His; the "vessel" is now us.
3. The Shift in Subject: Physical vs. Spiritual Miracles
While Jesus’ physical miracles were breathtaking, they were often temporary signs pointing to a deeper reality. Those He healed eventually grew old; Lazarus, though raised, eventually died again.
The "greater work" is the miracle of the new birth. When a soul moves from darkness to light, it is a work of eternal consequence.
Colossians 1:13 NIV For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,
On the day of Pentecost, Peter—a fisherman who had recently denied Christ—preached a single sermon and 3,000 people were saved. In one afternoon, Peter saw more conversions than are recorded in the entire three-year ministry of Jesus.
Acts 2:40-41 NIV [40] With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” [41] Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
Aligning Our Foundations
Doing "greater works" requires a continuous process of self-reflection and aligning our priorities with God's will. It isn't a "quick fix" or a supernatural shortcut; it is a lifestyle of hunger and thirst for His righteousness. As we seek Him, He satisfies that hunger by bearing fruit through our lives.
Matthew 5:6 NIV Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
We aren't called to be "greater" than Jesus in status, but to be the instruments of a "greater" harvest that spans the globe until He returns.
