Real renewal happens when individual believers are renewed from the inside out—and the key to that transformation is the person of the Holy Spirit.
Think of a gathering of people standing around a carefully stacked pile of wood in the cold, waiting to get warm. They have the wood, but no matches, no lighters, and no idea how to start a spark. They are simply sitting around a firewood stack hoping it becomes a bonfire. Without a spark, it’s just cold wood.
Too often, churches operate the exact same way. We organize the structures, build the programs, and arrange the seats, but we forget the spark. The Holy Spirit is the fire that ignites renewal.
Moving Beyond a "Two-Thirds" View of God
The Holy Spirit has often been called the forgotten member of the Godhead. While many believers comfortably lean on God the Father and put their faith in God the Son, they practically ignore the ministry of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, we settle for a "two-thirds" experience of God.
Yet, Scripture mentions the Holy Spirit over a hundred times, and Jesus spent significant time preparing His disciples to receive Him. The Trinity operates in perfect harmony to carry out our salvation:
God the Father designed and organized the redemptive plan
“But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. ” -
Galatians 4:4-5 NIV
God the Son (Jesus) executed the plan through His life, death, and resurrection
“For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”” - John 6:38-40 NIV
God the Holy Spirit applies that salvation to our lives, drawing us to God, convicting us of sin, and transforming our character
“When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.” -
John 16:8-11 NIV
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. ” -
Galatians 5:22-24 NIV
To experience spiritual vitality, we must understand how the Holy Spirit works in the life of a Christian through two distinct concepts: Indwelling and Infilling.
The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Who Has You?)
When a person repents and accepts Jesus Christ as Savior, the Holy Spirit immediately takes up residence within them. This is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
- “At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. ” - Titus 3:3-7 NIV (emphasis mine)
- “ “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. ” - John 14:15-18 NIV (emphasis mine)
The moment you are born again, you receive the Holy Spirit in full. He marks you as God’s own, secures your salvation, and begins the process of changing your desires. You don't get "bits and pieces" of the Holy Spirit over time; at conversion, you receive Him entirely.
The essential question for every believer regarding the indwelling Spirit isn't "How much of the Holy Spirit do I have?" but rather, "How much of me does the Holy Spirit have?"
The Infilling of the Holy Spirit (Being Continually Refilled)
While the indwelling occurs once at salvation, the infilling (or being filled with the Spirit) is a continuous, daily process.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” - Romans 12:2 NIV
Transformation isn't a one-time event; it's an ongoing surrender.
To be filled with the Spirit means to yield control of your decisions, thoughts, attitudes, and
actions to His guidance daily. Just as a sail catches the wind to move a ship forward, yielding to the Holy Spirit allows His power to drive our lives.
“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”” - John 3:8 NIV
When we align our daily priorities with God's will, the Spirit produces His fruit within us—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. ” - Galatians 5:22-25 NIV
Igniting Renewal in Your Life Today
If you feel spiritually exhausted, dry, or stuck in routine, remember that human effort alone cannot produce spiritual fire. You cannot manufacture transformation through willpower or rigid discipline alone.
Renewal begins when we stop relying on our own strength and yield to the Spirit:
- Self-Reflection: Are there areas of your life where you're keeping control instead of yielding to the Spirit?
- Daily Prayer: Ask the Holy Spirit daily to fill you, guide your actions, and renew your mind.
- Obedience: Walk in alignment with Scripture, allowing the Spirit to convict, teach, and guide you.
When believers surrender to the Holy Spirit, individual lives are set ablaze—and that is how the Church experiences genuine, lasting renewal.
