If your holidays are like the ones that I plan to have this year they will be filled with the noise, joyful chatter, and the happy chaos of a family gathering. But often , amidst the celebration, we carry a hidden weight—a feeling of uncertainty, a lingering worry, or a simple feeling of being overwhelmed by life's demands.
Where do we go when the ground feels shaky? Where do we find true, unwavering security that makes our gratitude steadfast, regardless of what's happening around us?
Psalm 61 offers a beautiful, timeless answer, giving us a reason for gratitude that is utterly secure.
Crying Out for the Rock that is Higher
The Psalm begins with a cry from the heart: "Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I."
The psalmist, David, is honest about feeling "faint" and far away. We all have moments when we feel like we are at the "end of the earth," distanced by difficulty or despair. But the very first act of faith and the very first reason for gratitude is knowing that we have somewhere to turn. We can turn to “the Rock that is higher than we are.”
That Rock—God—gives us stability, permanence, and power. Our security is in the unshakeable nature of our Creator. When we feel overwhelmed, our simple act of turning to Him leads us to a position of strength we could never reach on our own.
The Refuge and the Dwelling Place
This assurance of the higher Rock quickly transitions into the imagery of a safe haven: "For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe. I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings."
What an amazing image for our reflection! God is not just a high vantage point; He is our refuge and a strong tower. He is the tent, the permanent dwelling, and the protective shelter..
Our security is found in dwelling with Him—making our relationship with God the primary priority in our lives. We can pause amid the feasting and be truly thankful that we have a permanent, eternal shelter, not a temporary one. This refuge is what allows us to anchor our hearts in gratitude, knowing we are covered and safe.
Further Foundations for Thanksgiving Security
This strong foundation in faith, is echoed throughout Scripture, reinforcing our reasons for continuous praise:
- Psalm 18:2: "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."
- Proverbs 18:10: "The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe."
