The Misconception of Conditional Forgiveness
Sadly, even Christians often have a distorted view of forgiveness. Some believe they have the right to dictate the terms, setting up their own hoops for others to jump through. They ignore clear instructions.
Colossians 3:12-14 NIV [12] Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. [13] Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. [14] And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Instead of reflecting God's boundless grace, we often impose conditions, believing we have the authority to judge who is worthy.
Forgiveness Begins with God
The truth is that forgiveness originates with God. It flows from His heart; forgiveness is a free and unearned gift.
Ephesians 4:31-32 NIV [31] Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. [32] Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. (emphasis mine)
God is the ultimate source of forgiveness, not only for our own sins but also for the sins of others against us. By receiving His forgiveness, we relinquish our right to hold onto bitterness and resentment.
The High Cost of Unforgiveness
A sobering truth that many Christians conveniently overlook is that forgiveness isn't cheap. It comes at a high cost, both for God and for us. We readily accept God's forgiveness, yet we hesitate to extend the same grace to others. We claim worthiness while denying it to those who have wronged us. God's forgiveness, purchased by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, demands a response. It compels us to release our grip on unforgiveness, to let go of the right to demand retribution.
Matthew 6:14-15 NIV [14] For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. [15] But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
Love and Forgiveness are Two Sides of the Same Coin
Those who struggle to forgive often struggle to truly grasp God's love. Those who are forgiven much, love much.
Luke 7:41-47 NIV [41] “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. [42] Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” [43] Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said. [44] Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. [45] You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. [46] You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. [47] Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
The sinful woman who anointed Jesus' feet understood the depth of her forgiveness, and her love overflowed.
Unforgiveness is a symptom of a heart that hasn't fully experienced the transformative power of God's grace. When we utterly understand the magnitude of our own forgiveness, we are compelled to extend it to others, without reservation.
The Freedom of Forgiveness
The good news is that God's forgiveness is available to all who repent and ask for His forgiveness. Regardless of whether others forgive us, we can find freedom from condemnation in His grace.
Forgiveness isn't always easy. It's costly, it’s a surrender of our pride and our desire for justice. But it's also a path to freedom, a release from the chains of bitterness and resentment.
Remember that forgiveness is not a transaction, but a transformation. It's a reflection of God's love, a gift we receive and a gift we must give. Choose to forgive, not because others deserve it, but because we have been forgiven. Choose to walk in the freedom that only true forgiveness can bring.
