Ephesians 6:13-17 NIV [13] Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. [14] Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, [15] and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. [16] In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. [17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
This is not a static set of equipment, but a dynamic, spiritual posture. It requires a continuous process of regular self-reflection, a commitment to maintaining a strong foundation in faith, and an unwavering openness to God’s guidance. Over this series, we will explore how each piece of this divine kit allows us to align our priorities with God’s will.
The first piece of armor is the Belt of Truth the second piece is the Breastplate of Righteousness.

The Vital Role of the BreastplateA Roman soldier's breastplate (the lorica) protected the most vital organs: the heart and the lungs. A wound to the arm or leg might be painful, but a wound to the chest was usually fatal. In the spiritual sense, the "heart" represents our inner life—the place where we make decisions and where our deepest desires reside.
The enemy’s most common tactic is "the accusation." He is the "Accuser of the Brethren," and he targets our hearts by pointing out our failures, our inconsistencies, and our past sins. If he can convince us that we are unworthy, unloved, or hopelessly broken, he can paralyze us. This is why we must wear the Breastplate of Righteousness.
Imputed vs. Imparted Righteousness
To wear this piece of armor effectively, we must distinguish between two types of righteousness:
- Imputed Righteousness: This is the "legal" righteousness given to us through faith in Jesus Christ. It is a gift. When God looks at the believer, He sees the perfection of His Son. This is our primary defense against the enemy's accusations. When the devil says, "Look at what you did," the Breastplate of Righteousness says, "Look at what Christ did." This is the foundation of our security.
- Imparted Righteousness: This refers to our daily conduct—living a life that is "right" before God. While our salvation is not based on our works, our spiritual protection is often tied to our obedience. When we willfully walk in sin, we create "cracks" in our breastplate. These cracks don't make God love us less, but they do make us more susceptible to the emotional and spiritual consequences of our choices.
Living in Alignment
Protecting your heart requires regular self-reflection. Aligning your priorities with God's will means inviting the Holy Spirit to examine your motives. Is there a "secret sin" that is corroding your confidence? Is there a lack of forgiveness that is making your heart brittle?
Putting on the breastplate is a daily act of surrender. It is saying, "Lord, I trust in Your righteousness today, and I ask You to help me walk in a way that honors You." By doing so, you guard your heart against the poisons of guilt and cynicism, ensuring that your vital organs—your love for God and your passion for His Kingdom—remain protected in the heat of battle.
