Ephesians 6:13-17 NLT [13] Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. [14] Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. [15] For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. [16] In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. [17] Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
This is not a static set of equipment, but a dynamic, spiritual posture. It requires a continuous process of regular self-reflection, a commitment to maintaining a strong foundation in faith, and an unwavering openness to God’s guidance. Over this series, we will explore how each piece of this divine kit allows us to align our priorities with God’s will.
Girding the Loins of the Mind
The first piece of armor is the Belt of Truth.
Ephesians 6:14 NLT Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.
In the ancient world, a soldier’s belt (the cingulum) was far more than a fashion accessory. It was the anchor for the entire uniform. It tucked in the long, flowing tunics of the day so the soldier wouldn't trip during a charge, and it provided the heavy-duty framework upon which the sword and breastplate were secured. If the belt was loose, the soldier was vulnerable, hindered, and effectively disarmed.
In our spiritual lives, truth serves this exact purpose. We live in an era often described as "post-truth," where subjective feelings and personal "narratives" frequently take precedence over objective reality. Spiritual warfare thrives in the shadows of deception. The enemy is described as the "father of lies," and his primary tactic is to distort our perception of God, ourselves, and the world around us.
The Two Dimensions of Truth
Wearing the Belt of Truth involves two distinct but inseparable dimensions:
- Objective Truth: This is the bedrock of Scripture. It is the unchanging reality of who God is and what He has promised. When we gird ourselves with this truth, we are anchoring our souls to the character of God. This requires regular study and immersion in the Word so that when a lie enters our mind—such as "God doesn't care about you"—we can immediately feel the "tug" of the belt, reminding us of the objective reality that He is a loving Father.
- Subjective Integrity: This is truthfulness in our inward parts. It is living a life of transparency and honesty. If we are living a double life or harboring secret sins, our "belt" is loose. We become clumsy in our walk and lose the ability to carry the sword of the Spirit effectively.
Tightening the Belt
Maintaining a strong foundation in faith means constantly checking the fit of our belt. This is a continuous process of self-reflection. Ask yourself: Where have I allowed cultural narratives to replace Biblical truth? Where am I being dishonest with myself or others? When our priorities are aligned with God's will, the Belt of Truth feels secure. It provides the core strength necessary to support the weight of the trials we face. Without truth, the rest of the armor has nowhere to hang. Today, choose to "gird up the loins of your mind" by replacing a specific worry or lie with a solid, scriptural truth.
