We often fall into the trap of treating our spiritual life like an audition—trying to earn our keep through self-effort, good works, or sheer willpower. But salvation was never designed to be earned. It isn't a reward for human perfection, nor is it something we can manufacture on our own.
It begins with a quiet, deliberate surrender: placing our whole lives—the victories, the doubts, and the broken pieces—into God's hands. We yield our self-reliance and accept the unmerited gift of grace made possible solely through Christ.
Held by a Secure Grip
The spiritual path is rarely linear. There are moments along the journey when doubt creeps in, when we feel distant, or when we instinctively pull back and wrestle with what we believe.
Yet, our security does not depend on the strength of our own grip; it relies entirely on His hold on us.
John 10:25-29 NIV [25] Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, [26] but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. [27] My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. [28] I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. (emphasis mine)
Our peace isn't grounded in a self-made ledger where good deeds outweigh bad ones. It rests on the finished work and merit of Jesus Christ. If self-improvement or moral righteousness were enough to bridge the gap, the sacrifice on the cross would have been unnecessary. Christ came precisely because we could not pave our own way to eternity.
Moving Forward in Grounded Trust
Aligning our priorities with God's will is a continuous process of regular self-reflection and openness to His guidance. But that process takes place on a foundation that cannot be shaken.
When you abandon the pressure to save yourself and anchor your faith in Christ:
Romans 8:38-39 NIV For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Matthew 11:28-30 MSG Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
You are held by the Good Shepherd—and in that truth, you can let go of the need to strive and truly rest in His grace.
