It seems like an easy fix, but if we look at history—and human nature—miracles rarely change hearts long-term.
Miracles Attract, But They Don't Hold Us
When Jesus walked the earth, He performed mind-blowing miracles. He healed the sick, cast out demons, and raised the dead. Yet, after three years of unprecedented signs and wonders, crowds still walked away, and many turned on Him in the end.
Look back at the Old Testament, too. Israel saw the Red Sea part right in front of their eyes, fed on bread falling from heaven, and followed a pillar of fire by night. Yet just a few months later, they were bowing down to a gold calf.
The truth is, miracles are great at grabbing our attention, but they don't automatically build trust or intimacy.
In the early Church, supernatural signs served a specific purpose: they validated the apostles' leadership and confirmed the message of grace as the Gospel spread into new territories (Acts 14:3).
But if you already believe, you don't need a constant showcase of power to know God cares for you. You don't need a flash of thunder to know He hears your prayers.
Why Love Changes Everything
There’s a massive difference between attracting someone and reaching them.
- To attract is to catch someone's eye with something interesting or flashy.
- To reach means extending a hand, building a bridge, and making actual contact.
Jesus didn't say the world would recognize His followers by their signs, spiritual gifts, or supernatural power. He said:
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35 NIV)
In a world full of noise, division, and superficial connections, genuine, self-sacrificing love is the most radical thing imaginable. When people see a community loving each other well—crossing socio-economic divides, setting aside differences, and showing up in messy, real-life moments—it stops them in their tracks.
The Ultimate Proof
Miracles can leave people asking, "How did that happen?" But consistent, sacrificial love leaves people asking, "Why are you like this? What empowers you to love like that?"
When we answer with "Jesus," that’s when lives truly change. Signs and wonders might turn a head, but the love of God moving through everyday believers is what reaches a heart.
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, eeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. (1Peter 3:15-16 NIV)
Notice that it doesn’t say, "Force your opinions onto people until they surrender." It says people will ask you for the reason for your hope. That simple word—”asks”—implies that your life should look so noticeably different, so counter-cultural, that it naturally provokes curiosity. .
