We shift careers, navigate changing relationships, watch our family structures evolve, and face unexpected losses. Circumstances are never static. Yet in the middle of a world defined by constant transition, we are anchored by an immovable truth: the Creator of the universe remains entirely constant.
Shifting Seasons vs. An Unchanging God
The changing of physical seasons is built into the order of creation. As written in Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV, "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."
These transitions bring rhythm, harvest, and necessary rest. But life often brings sudden personal shifts that leave us feeling ungrounded.
When everything around us is in motion, we naturally look for something stable to hold onto. Human plans fluctuate, emotions rise and fall, and earthly guarantees fade. But God’s character is unyielding:
- His Character is Constant: He does not experience good days and bad days. His holiness, mercy, and justice remain intact across generations. Malachi 3:6 KLV affirms this stability: "For I am the Lord, I change not…"
- His Word Holds Firm: Circumstances do not alter His commitments. While human words fade, God’s truth outlasts every era. As Isaiah 40:8 KJV reminds us, "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."
- His Purpose Prevails: A winter season in life does not mean God has paused His work. Just as soil rests beneath the cold to prepare for spring, quiet or challenging times are often where God works most deeply beneath the surface. Hebrews 13:8 KJV anchors this truth: "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
Finding Rest in the Unchanging One
Trusting an unchanging God does not mean we ignore the pain or difficulty of shifting seasons. It means we view our temporary circumstances through the lens of His enduring faithfulness, rather than viewing God through the lens of our temporary circumstances.
When you find yourself in a period of transition, consider these steps:
1. Release the Need for Control: Acknowledge that while you cannot govern every outcome, you are held by the One who oversees every season. Psalm 46:10 KJV encourages us: "Be still, and know that I am God…"
2. Anchor Yourself in Truth: Ground your mind daily in Scripture rather than changing headlines, personal feelings, or shifting opinions.
3. Look for the Purpose in the Present: Every season serves a unique function. Seek God's guidance on what He is cultivating in your heart right now, trusting that He is guiding your steps. As Lamentations 3:22–23 KJV notes, "It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness."
The leaves will fall, the temperature will shift, and life will continue to move forward. But the foundation under your feet remains entirely secure.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. ” -James 1:17 KJV
