The Deceptive Lies of Satan
Satan, the master of deception, loves to sow seeds of doubt in the hearts of believers. He wants you to believe that your salvation is a precarious tightrope walk, dependent on your perfect performance. Here are some of the common lies he'll try to tell you:
Lie #1: "You sinned again, so you've lost your salvation."
This is a classic. You made a mistake, you fell short, and immediately the enemy swoops in to condemn you. He wants you to believe that God's love is conditional, easily revoked by your imperfections.
The Truth: While sin does grieve God, it doesn't nullify His grace. Our salvation is secured by Christ's finished work, not our flawless behavior.
1 John 1:9 NIV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Lie #2: "You don't feel saved anymore, so you must not be."
Feelings are fleeting and unreliable. Satan knows this and will try to make your salvation dependent on your emotional state. When you're in a spiritual dry spell or experiencing doubt, he'll pounce on those feelings.
The Truth: Our salvation is a fact, based on God's promises, not our fluctuating emotions. It's about belief and confession, not a constant emotional high.
Romans 10:9-10 NIV [9] If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Lie #3: "You're not doing enough for God, so He's probably displeased with you."
This lie often intertwines with legalism. Satan wants you to believe that you have to earn God's favor through your works, your service, or your spiritual disciplines.
The Truth: Salvation is a gift, not a reward for our efforts. We serve God because we are saved, not to be saved.
Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV [8] For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— [9] not by works, so that no one can boast. [10] For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Lie #4: "You weren't truly saved in the first place."
When all else fails, Satan will attack the very foundation of your faith. He'll try to make you question the authenticity of your initial conversion, leading to endless introspection and insecurity.
The Truth: If you have confessed Jesus as Lord and believed in your heart, you are saved.
Romans 10:9-10 NIV [9] If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Your salvation is held in the unbreakable grip of God Himself.
John 10:28-29 NIV [28] I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
God's Unwavering Commitment
The core message we must grasp is this: God's commitment to your salvation is absolute and unwavering. He initiated it, He sustains it, and He will complete it.
He Chose You:
Ephesians 1:3-6 NIV [3] Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. [4] For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love [5] he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— [6] to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. (emphasis mine)
He Called You:
Romans 8:29-30 NIV [29] For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. [30] And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
He Justified You:
Romans 5:1-2 NIV [1] Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, [2] through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
He Sealed You:
Ephesians 1:13-14 NIV[13] And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, [14] who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. (emphasis mine)
He Will Keep You:
Philippians 1:4-6 NIV [4] In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy [5] because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, [6] being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Take a moment to let that sink in. Your salvation is not a precarious achievement you must maintain, but a secure reality established by God's power and grace.
When doubt whispers and Satan tries to condemn, remember whose hands your salvation truly rests in. It's not yours to earn or lose, but God's to give and secure. Rest in His unfailing love and promises today.
