But when I look back at those exact same valleys today, one thing stands out: God came through. Every. Single. Time.
It didn't always happen on my schedule, and it rarely looked the way I thought it would. But He was never late, and His grace was always enough.
The Problem with Spiritual Amnesia
Human nature is funny that way. We have a bad habit of forgetting. The second a new storm hits, we panic like we've never seen a miracle before. We stare at the height of the current wave instead of remembering the power of the One who controls the ocean.
To break that cycle of fear, we have to get intentional about remembering. When doubt starts creeping in, grab hold of your past victories. Remembering isn't just taking a passive trip down memory lane—it's a spiritual defense strategy against anxiety.
When you recall specific times God pulled you out of deep water, provided a last-minute breakthrough, or healed your heart, you anchor your faith in real evidence. You remind yourself that the same God who carried you yesterday is right here today, and He's already shaping your tomorrow.
Taking a Page from the Psalms
The writers of the Old Testament knew this secret. Whenever King David or the sons of Korah felt overwhelmed, they stopped and talked out loud about what God had already done to steady their hearts.
Psalm 77 gives us a great roadmap for this. In the first half, the writer is completely honest about his pain and distress. But then he makes a deliberate pivot:
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”” - Psalms 77:11-12 NIV
Notice he didn't wait for his life to get easier before he chose to remember. He changed his focus first, shifting his attention away from the size of his problem and onto the track record of his God.
If things feel heavy right now, let these promises soak in:
“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” - Psalms 34:17-18 NIV
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.” - Psalms 40:1-2 NIV
“Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.” - Psalms 107:13-14 NIV
Finding Your Peace Today
If you're in a spot right now where it feels like there’s no way forward, pause. Before you try to figure out your next step, look backward.
Sit quietly for a few minutes. Write down or think about three specific times in your life where you thought a trial would break you—and remember how God brought you through it. Let those memories remind you that your current situation isn't out of His reach. The darkness feels heavy right now, but it won't last forever. God has a 100% success rate in your life, and He isn't about to change that now.
