James 1:22-25 NLT But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. (emphasis mine)
This passage acts as a powerful mirror, showing us the truth of our spiritual condition and demanding an honest response. It's an invitation to move beyond just knowing what we believe and start living it out.
The Danger of a Passive Faith
It's easy to deceive ourselves by only listening to God's word. We can go to church, read the Bible, and listen to podcasts, yet remain unchanged. This is the danger of a passive faith. We might convince ourselves that "knowing" the truth is enough, but as Jesus taught, "by their fruit you will recognize them".
Matthew 7:15-20 NIV “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. (emphasis mine)
The true test of our faith isn't what we consume, but what we produce. The reflection of God's Word in our lives should compel us to action, not just contemplation.
The analogy of the mirror is perfect. We look at our face, see a blemish, and know what needs to be changed. But if we walk away and immediately forget what we saw, that knowledge was useless. Our spiritual lives are no different. The Bible reveals our shortcomings, our need for grace, and the path to righteousness. If we close the book and go about our day as if nothing has changed, we are no better off.
The Perfect Law of Freedom
The Word of God isn't a rigid set of rules meant to limit us. It's a "perfect law that gives freedom." It frees us from the tyranny of our own sinful nature and the futility of a life lived apart from God. This freedom comes from intentionally and continuously applying its truths to our lives.
This is where faith becomes real, especially for those in positions of political power. A politician who claims to be a person of faith but doesn't live by its principles is like the person who forgets their own reflection. If God's word is a mirror, then it should be reflected in how a leader governs—with integrity, justice, and compassion.
Micah 6:8 NIV He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
It’s not just about what a leader says on a campaign trail; it’s about how they serve the vulnerable and prioritize justice over personal gain.
As citizens, we are also called to be doers of the word. Our involvement in the political process shouldn't just be about supporting a party or a candidate. It should be about aligning our priorities with God's will and acting on them:
- This means praying for our leaders
1 Timothy 2:1-2 NIV I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
- This means working for justice, speaking truth in love, and seeking the welfare of our community.
Micah 6:8 NIV He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Being a "doer of the word" means more than just holding a list of beliefs. It means living a life that is a testament to those beliefs. It's a continuous, intentional process of checking our lives against the mirror of God’s Word and then taking the necessary steps to align our actions with what we see. This is the path to a life of true blessing and freedom.
Our hope isn't in a political party or a particular leader, but in the power of God to transform hearts and lives—our own and those around us. Our actions, guided by God’s Word, become a source of purpose, fruitfulness, and true satisfaction. It is in the doing that we find the evidence of our faith and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
The challenge for all of us is to stop just looking in the mirror. It's time to humbly accept the Word planted in us and, by God's grace, to become doers of it.
