Colossians 1:16 NIV For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Every breath we take, every galaxy in motion, and every quiet detail of the universe operates under His supreme authority and ongoing care.
Psalms 103:19 NIV The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.
Yet, from the very beginning, humanity struggled with that reality.
Choosing Self Over Sovereignty
In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve made a choice that shattered the harmony of creation.
Genesis 3:6 NIV When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
Their decision to reject God’s authority was more than simple disobedience; it was a bid for independence—an attempt to sit on the throne of their own lives.
That single act of rebellion threw the world into chaos:
- Relational Rupture: Humanity was separated from the presence and peace of God
Romans 5:12 NIV Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned--
- Creation in Decay: The natural order itself began to groan under the weight of brokenness, suffering, and death
Romans 8:20-21 NIV For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.
- Internal Conflict: Heart and mind became inclined toward self-centeredness rather than divine alignment
Jeremiah 17:9 NIV The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
Ever since, human history has reflected the consequences of living in a world untethered from its true Source.
A Patient Plan of Restoration
The narrative of Scripture does not end in the shadow of Eden. God did not abandon His creation to the chaos we caused, nor did He sweep humanity aside to start over from scratch. Instead, He launched a patient, persistent plan to restore His rightful rule over the earth—not through destruction, but through redemption .
2 Peter 3:9 NIV The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Throughout the biblical narrative, God called a people, established covenants, and promised a Savior who would ultimately mend what was broken. That promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection defeated sin and death, paving the way for full reconciliation.
Colossians 1:19-20 NIV For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Living in Light of God's Kingdom
Understanding this grand narrative changes how we view our daily lives:
- Surrender Brings Peace: Acknowledging that God is in charge removes the burden of trying to control what we were never meant to carry.
Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
- Active Hope: We are invited to participate in God's restorative work today, demonstrating His love, justice, and grace to a broken world.
2 Corinthians 5:20 NIV We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
- Certainty for the Future: We look forward with confidence to the day Revelation foretells—when God's kingdom is fully realized, and every corner of creation is made new.
Revelation 21:3-4 NIV And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
God’s story has always been about bringing us back to Himself. The invitation remains open to trust His sovereignty, rest in His grace, and align our lives with His redeeming purpose.
