Have you ever held a handful of sand at the beach and tried to count every single tiny grain? You start for a second, but then you realize pretty quickly how completely impossible it is.
That is the exact picture David gives us in the Psalms to help us grasp something amazing: God is thinking about you constantly.
In a world where it is so easy to feel overlooked, forgotten, or like just another face in the crowd, Scripture gives us a reassuring truth to lean on. You aren't an afterthought floating through life on your own. You are actively, continuously, and lovingly on the mind of the Creator.
God’s Thoughts Aren't Just Few and Far Between
In Psalm 139:17–18, David can't help but stop and praise God when he really thinks about this:
Psalms 139:17-18 NIV How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you.
Look at what David is telling us about the way God thinks of us:
When you lay your head down at night, God is watching over you. When you wake up in the morning, He is still right there. His care for you never pauses.
Psalms 121:3-4NIV He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
Psalms 3:5 NIV I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
Psalms 4:8 NIV In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.
This reassuring thread runs all throughout the Bible:
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

To really soak in the weight of God’s attention, take a minute to read through the whole psalm. It starts with how well God knows us, talks about how we can never wander away from His presence, highlights how detailed He made us, and finishes with an invitation for Him to guide our steps.
For the director of music. Of David. A Psalm
You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

If only you, God, would slay the wicked! Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty! They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord, and loathe those who are in rebellion against you? I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies.
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Living in Light of This Truth
Knowing that God’s thoughts of you outnumber the grains of sand isn't just a nice theological detail. It changes how you live out your everyday life:
Take a pause today, take a deep breath, and let it sink in. The God who made the oceans and the stars is thinking about you right now.

- You can pray with complete honesty. Since God already knows what you're thinking before you even speak it out loud, you don't have to polish your prayers. You can come to Him just as you are, open and sincere.
