Jesus shares a beautiful parable that illustrates God's loving generosity.
Luke 11:11-13 NIV [11] “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? [12] Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? [13] If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Think about that for a moment. As earthly parents, we strive to give our children good gifts. We wouldn't offer them something harmful when they ask for something good and necessary. How much more, then, will our perfect, loving Heavenly Father respond to our sincere requests? He doesn't give us stones when we ask for bread, or scorpions when we ask for eggs. He gives us what is truly good, and often, far beyond what we can imagine.
Ephesians 3:20-21 NIV [20] Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, [21] to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (emphasis mine)
Jesus’ parable isn't just about getting what we want; it's about understanding the heart of God. He is a good Father who deeply cares for His children. He desires to bless us, to provide for us, and to walk with us through every season of life. When we approach Him in prayer, we can do so with the assurance that He hears us, He loves us, and He is able to do "far more abundantly than all that we ask or think".
So, how can we cultivate this confidence in our prayer lives?
Believe in God's Goodness
The foundation of confident prayer is a firm belief in God's character. He is good, gracious, and generous.
James 1:16-18 NIV [16] Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. [17] Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. [18] He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. (emphasis mine)
This truth reassures us that God's nature is constant and benevolent. We can also "taste and see that the Lord is good" and trust that "no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless". This deep-seated belief is what gives us the courage to approach His throne in prayer.
Psalms 34:8 NIV Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Psalms 84:11 NIV For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.
Pray According to His Will
While God wants to give us good gifts, our prayers should align with His will, which is always for our ultimate good and His glory. This is the source of our confidence.
1 John 5:14-15 NIV [14] This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. [15] And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
We can also be guided by the Holy Spirit, who "helps us in our weakness.
Romans 8:26-27 NIV [26] In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. [27] And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
Persevere in Prayer
Just as Jesus taught in the parable of the persistent widow, sometimes we need to keep asking, seeking, and knocking. Not because God is reluctant, but because perseverance builds our faith and reveals His perfect timing.
Luke 18:1-8 NIV [1] Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. [2] He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. [3] And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ [4] “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, [5] yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’ ” [6] And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. [7] And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? [8] I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”
Our faithful endurance in prayer demonstrates our trust in God's plan and His promises.
Colossians 4:2 NIV Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.
Galatians 6:9 NIV Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Pray with a Pure Heart
The effectiveness of our prayers is also linked to the condition of our hearts.
Psalms 66:18 NIV If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;
Confession and repentance are essential for a close walk with God.
Psalms 51:10 NIV Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
A pure heart is not about being perfect, but about having a heart that is repentant, surrendered to God, and aligned with His desires. When we "come near to God," He promises to "come near to you"
James 4:8 NIV Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Let go of doubt and fear. Embrace the truth that you have a loving Heavenly Father who eagerly desires to hear from you and bless you. Approach Him with confidence today, knowing that He is good, and He gives good gifts to His children.
