We yearn for a spiritual awakening across our nation, for people to draw closer to God in ways that profoundly impact every aspect of our lives and our country. We need to realign ourselves with the biblical values that are the bedrock of our strength, and we must protect the democracy that came at such a great cost.
As Founding Father and second U.S. President John Adams wisely wrote: “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven, that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.”
As Christians, we stand firm in the belief that prayer is powerful. We trust that God hears us when we call on Him, and that His Holy Spirit can work in miraculous ways to bring about positive change in our country. So, this July 4th, let’s unite in asking God to ignite a spiritual revival in our nation that touches every single person living here!
Here are five prayers for a country in need of revival this July 4th.
1. A Prayer for Humility and Positive Change
Dear God, my nation—the United States—urgently needs your mercy. We’ve often wandered away from you, chasing our own desires and forgetting the fundamental truths this country was built upon. We’ve placed more trust in our own efforts than in your divine guidance and help. At times, we’ve grown so proud of our abundance that we take it for granted, no longer feeling the need to listen to your direction. I confess that I’ve personally contributed to this spiritual decline through my own failures to listen to you when I should have.
God, your Word reminds me
2 Chronicles 7:14 NLT Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
I pray for a mighty spirit of humility to spread across our nation. Please expose our sins—sins of selfishness, unkindness, divisiveness, and more. Open my eyes, God, to see our country and myself from your perspective. Give me a fresh sense of hope and show me how our lives can improve when we trust you more. I pray for a spirit of true repentance, so we can turn away from our mistakes and turn toward you.
Help us to do more than just feel sorry, but to truly rely on your Holy Spirit to live holy lives. Please help us transform our thoughts, which shape our attitudes and actions, and ultimately the entire direction of our lives. Help us to dismantle the walls of pride and self-reliance that we’ve built. Pour out your Spirit, so people across our nation will be moved to humble themselves before you, seek your face, and turn completely back to your righteous ways. Heal our land as only you can, working in the hearts and minds of everyone in America. In Jesus' name. Amen.
2. A Prayer to Come Together in Unity and Healing
Dear God, it’s profoundly painful to witness the divisions tearing our nation apart. Americans are so fractured that civil discourse often feels impossible. Despite the name “United States,” we lack the unity in diversity that you desire for your people to enjoy. I confess that I, too, have sometimes exacerbated these divisions through my judgments, my impatience, or my unwillingness to listen to those who think differently from me. Your Son, Jesus, prayed for unity among believers.
John 17:21 NLT I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
God, I pray for a miracle of unity in the United States. Break down the walls of hatred and misunderstanding that separate us. Give us the grace to see each other through your eyes, as valuable people who are all created in your image and deserving of love and respect.
Inspire me to do what I can personally to work for unity and healing. Help me to admit my past mistakes and find ways to heal and restore broken relationships. Show me how to resolve current conflicts in my life by listening well, with a true desire to understand and learn from those who hold different views. Instead of trying to control or shame people I don’t agree with, help me feel empathy for them and truly hear their points of view.
Colossians 3:14 NLT Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.
I pray for a fresh outpouring of your Holy Spirit that would connect all Americans and foster genuine friendships among us. Let your love, which “binds everything together in perfect unity”, become the glue that holds us together, so that the world can see your presence among us and believe in you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
3. A Prayer for Trustworthy Leaders
Dear God, please help all of our nation’s leaders—the people who serve in all branches and departments of our federal, state, and local government, at all levels. They bear immense responsibilities, as their decisions profoundly affect millions of people. I confess that I have sometimes been quick to criticize our leaders and slow to pray for them. Your Word says;
Proverbs 29:2 NLT When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan.
Please raise up righteous leaders in every area of influence in the United States. Grant them the wisdom that comes from you, not from clever human plans or political maneuvers. Give them the ability to discern right from wrong, to choose justice for everyone over their own interests, and to prioritize the well-being of all citizens above partisan disagreements. I pray for leaders who will fear you, God, and seek your counsel above all else. Inspire them to lead with honesty, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to truth.
Protect them from corruption, from the temptations of power, and from the pressure to compromise their convictions. Give them the strength to bravely make the best decisions, even when those decisions are unpopular or difficult. Help them to be humble and motivated by service, rather than arrogant and motivated by power. Grant them compassion for all Americans they are called to serve. Please guide them day by day, so our nation can enjoy well-being. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Dear God, I am deeply concerned about the spread of misinformation throughout the United States and how many people are not fact-checking or using their God-given minds to think critically. It’s essential for Americans to think clearly about what is true and what is not, and to practice discernment to separate wisdom from foolishness.
John 8:32 NLT And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
Any of us can be easily swayed by popular opinions or by voices that agree with our own ideas if we are not evaluating messages carefully. I pray for a mighty revival of truth in the United States. Expose every lie and every attempt to trick or mislead people. Give me and everyone in our nation the wise discernment we need to accurately judge what’s true from what’s false and what’s good from what’s evil.
Help me to think carefully about the information I receive, to resist the urge to simply believe stories without checking the facts with reliable sources, and to stand up against evil attempts to deceive people. Please help those who work in our media and in our schools to be committed to honesty and accuracy. Convict all Americans to love truth, to seek it, to speak it, and to live by it consistently.
Free us from lies and lead us into the wonderful freedom that comes from knowing and embracing your truth. Let your light shine into every dark corner of false information and expose the truth. In Jesus' name. Amen.
5. A Prayer for a Great Spiritual Awakening and Hunger for God
Dear God, please start a nationwide spiritual awakening this July Fourth. It sometimes feels like a spiritual apathy has settled over many people—even those who claim to follow you. We all need to be spiritually refreshed.
Acts 3:19 NIV Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,
Please let a time of refreshment sweep across the United States. Spark a hunger for you in the hearts of people from all walks of life. Let them be hungry for holiness that leads to closer relationships with you. Help all Americans understand sin and their desperate need for you. Let them feel your love for them in ways that inspire them to move closer to you.
Please revitalize U.S. churches. Make them all places of passionate prayer and worship, with successful outreaches to their communities. Help all believers in our country share your Gospel message in fresh ways, with love and courage. Let all Americans learn about the ultimate hope you offer them. In Jesus' name. Amen.
As the fireworks light up the sky this July Fourth, let’s spread God’s light by praying for a revival in our nation. As we pray for revival and liv
