Waiting on God is one of the most challenging aspects of the Christian Walk. It requires a profound trust in His wisdom and sovereignty, even when we can't see the path ahead. The Bible is filled with stories of men and women who faced long seasons of waiting—Abraham and Sarah waiting for a son, Joseph waiting in a prison cell, and David waiting to become king. In each case, their faith was refined in the waiting, and God’s perfect plan was revealed in His perfect timing.
So how do we endure? The key is to persevere in prayer. It’s not about begging God to speed things up, but about aligning our hearts with His.
1. Be Persistent in Prayer
Jesus Himself taught us to be persistent. In the parable of the persistent widow, a woman repeatedly and shamelessly goes to an unjust judge to plead her case. Because of her persistence, the judge granted her request.
Luke 18:1-8 NLT One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. “There was a judge in a certain city,” he said, “who neither feared God nor cared about people. A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, saying, ‘Give me justice in this dispute with my enemy.’ The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself, ‘I don’t fear God or care about people, but this woman is driving me crazy. I’m going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!’” Then the Lord said, “Learn a lesson from this unjust judge. Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?”
Jesus uses this story to teach us that if an unjust judge will eventually answer a persistent request, how much more will our loving heavenly Father answer us when we cry out to Him?
Our persistence in prayer isn't to change God's mind, but to change our own hearts. It builds our faith and reminds us that He is the source of all our needs.
2. Pray with Trust, Not Anxiety
When we are in a season of waiting, it’s easy for anxiety to creep in. We start to worry, doubt, and question God's plan. This is precisely when we need to turn our focus to Him.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT) Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Prayer is the antidote to worry. When we lay our requests before God with a heart of trust and thanksgiving, He promises to give us a peace that is not dependent on our circumstances.
3. Remember God's Faithfulness
As you wait, look back at the times God has been faithful in your life. Remember His promises from Scripture. God’s timing is always perfect because He sees the full picture, while we only see a small part.
Isaiah 55:8-11 NLT “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. “The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. (emphasis mine)
God’s delay is not denial. He is working behind the scenes for your good and His glory. In the waiting is often where our character is built, our faith is strengthened, and our relationship with God deepens.
So, as you wait, don’t give up. Persevere in prayer, lean on His promises, and trust that the God who sees all and knows all is working everything out for your ultimate good. His timing is perfect, and His peace is for you.
