When we look at the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—the attribute of holiness belongs equally to all three. God the Father is holy; Jesus Christ, the Son, is the Holy One of God. Why, then, is the third person of the Godhead uniquely and consistently given the distinct title of the Holy Spirit?
To understand this, we have to look beyond a simple label and look into His unique character, His sacred mission, and His powerful work in our daily lives.
1. He is Holy in His Essential Nature
First and foremost, the Holy Spirit is called holy because He is an absolute deity. Holiness represents the total purity, majesty, and set-apart nature of God. The Holy Spirit is not a vague cosmic force or an impersonal energy; He is God, completely separate from sin and defilement.
In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for holy is qadosh, which means "set apart" or "cut off" from the ordinary. In the New Testament, the Greek word is hagios. The Holy Spirit is the very breath of God’s untainted righteousness.
John 14:25-26 NIV [25] “All this I have spoken while still with you. [26] But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (emphasis mine)
2. He is the Author of Scripture
The Holy Spirit is the source of the ultimate standard of holiness on earth: the Word of God. The scriptures are called the Holy Bible because they were breathed out by God through the direct operation of the Holy Spirit moving upon human writers.
2 Peter 1:21 NIV [21] For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Because the Spirit is perfectly holy, the truth He communicates is flawless, enduring, and designed to guide us away from the darkness of the world and into God’s marvelous light.
3. He is the Agent of Our Sanctification
While the Father initiated the plan of salvation and the Son executed it on the cross, it is the Holy Spirit who applies that salvation to our hearts. He is called "Holy" because His primary mission on earth today is sanctification—the process of making us holy.
When we accept Christ, the Holy Spirit takes up residence inside us. He convicts us of sin, cleanses our hearts, and empowers us to live a life that honors God. He is the one who produces spiritual fruit within us, shifting our desires away from the world and aligning them with God's perfect will.
1 Corinthians 6:7-11 NIV [7] The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? [8] Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters. [9] Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men [10] nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. Living in the Power of the Spirit
