However, the gospel presents a completely different reality: We do not fight for victory; we fight from victory.
When Christ uttered the words "It is finished" on the cross (John 19:30), He was not declaring a pause or a temporary truce. He was announcing the final, absolute completion of His work.
John 19:30 NIV When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
The debt was paid, sin was conquered, and the power of death was broken once and for all. Living from victory means aligning our minds, emotions, and daily decisions with this established spiritual reality.
1 Corinthians 15:56-57 NIV The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (emphasis mine)
Recognizing Your Positional Reality
To live from victory, you must first understand where you are seated. Scripture tells us that when God raised Jesus from the dead, He also raised us up with Him and seated us in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:6-7 NIV And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. (emphasis mine)
Your current position is not defined by your feelings, your temporary setbacks, or the spiritual battles surrounding you—it is defined by Christ's seat of authority at the right hand of the Father.
When you fight for victory, you act like a soldier trying to conquer territory that isn't yet yours. But when you fight from victory, you act like an enforcer maintaining the peace of a territory already won. The enemy’s main tactic is to convince you that the battle is still undecided. He relies on illusion, intimidation, and doubt to keep you trapped in a mindset of defeat.
Romans 8:36-39 NIV As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (emphasis mine)
Notice that the Apostle Paul calls us "more than conquerors." A conqueror goes out to battle and risks everything to secure victory. Someone who is "more than a conqueror" receives the inheritance and triumph of a battle fought and won by someone else. Jesus did the heavy lifting; we share in the triumph.
Shifting from Anxiety to Trust
A defeat-based mindset is characterized by anxiety, striving, and spiritual burnout. It asks questions like: "Will God come through for me?", "Am I strong enough to make it through this?", or "Why is the enemy winning?", however a victory-based mindset rests in God's sovereignty and faithful promises. It declares: "God has already provided what I need," "My future is secure in Christ," and "No weapon formed against me shall prosper."
Isaiah 54:16-17 NIV “See, it is I who created the blacksmith who fans the coals into flame and forges a weapon fit for its work. And it is I who have created the destroyer to wreak havoc; no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord. (emphasis mine)
1 John 5:3-5 NIV In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. (emphasis mine)
Living from victory does not mean you will never face trials, sickness, or pain. Jesus explicitly warned us that in this world we would have trouble. But in the very same breath, He offered the antidote:
John 16:33 NIV “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Your trial is real, but it is not ultimate. Christ's victory is ultimate.
Practical Steps to Walk in Victory Daily
A. Renew Your Mind with Truth Victory begins in the mind. When thoughts of inadequacy, defeat, or fear arise, take them captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) and replace them with God's promises. Speak scripture over your life, your family, and your circumstances.
2 Corinthians 10:4-6 NIV The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete. (emphasis mine).
B. Put On the Armor of God In Ephesians 6, Paul outlines the full armor of God. Notice that every piece of armor—truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God—is grounded in who Christ is and what He has done. Standing firm isn't about human willpower; it's about putting on Christ's finished work.
Ephesians 6:11-17 NIV Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. [17] Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
C. Maintain a Posture of Thanksgiving Praise and gratitude are the highest expressions of faith because they acknowledge the answer before it is seen. Thanking God for His goodness and victory in advance aligns your heart with His promises and silences the enemy.
Philippians 4:5-7 NIV Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. [6] Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
You are not a victim trying to survive the spiritual realm; you are a child of God, redeemed by the blood of Christ, operating from a place of permanent divine victory.
A Prayer of Victory
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the ultimate sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and for the absolute triumph He secured for us on the cross. Forgive us for the times we have lived like victims, striving in our own strength and letting fear dictate our daily lives.
Today, we make a conscious decision to shift our posture. We step out of a mindset of defeat and stand firm in the victory that Jesus has already won. Open our eyes to see our true position—seated with Christ in the heavenly places, clothed in His righteousness, and equipped with His authority.
When doubts, trials, or anxiety attempt to rise against us, remind us that the battle has already been decided. We anchor our minds in Your truth, knowing that in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Teach us to rest in Your finished work and to walk daily in confidence, peace, and unshakeable hope.
In the mighty and victorious name of Jesus Christ, we pray.
Amen.
