The Definition of a Witness
In a legal setting, a witness is someone who testifies to what they have personally seen, heard, or experienced. They do not invent stories; they simply report the truth of their firsthand experience.
In the New Testament, the Greek word for witness is martus. A biblical witness is someone who testifies to the reality, character, and salvation of Jesus Christ based on a personal encounter with Him. Jesus tells His followers that when the Holy Spirit comes upon them, they will receive power to be His witnesses locally and to the ends of the earth.
Acts 1:8 NIV But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (emphasis mine)
Notice that Jesus states this as an identity rather than an optional activity: being a witness is the fundamental reality of who we are in Christ.
Why We Need Witnesses Today
Why is witnessing so crucial in our generation?
- The World Search for Truth and Hope: Many people experience isolation, anxiety, and a lack of purpose. The Gospel offers a peace that surpasses understanding. People cannot call on or believe in someone they have not heard about, highlighting the necessity of someone sharing the message.
Romans 10:14 NIV How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
- God Works Through Believers: Rather than using supernatural displays in the sky, God entrusts His followers with the message of grace, calling us to act as His ambassadors
2 Corinthians 5:20 NIV We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
- Authentic Lives Counter Hypocrisy: Real faith expressed through genuine love, integrity, and humility validates the truth of Christ to a watching world.
1 Peter 2:11-12 NIV Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (emphasis mine)
How to Be a Witness for Jesus in the World Today
Being a witness in modern daily life doesn't require complex theological training—it requires an open heart and intentional living:
- Live with Integrity and Love: Our actions often speak before our words do. Jesus said that people will recognize His disciples by their love for one another. Living with honesty and kindness creates a compelling testimony.
John 13:34-35 NIV “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (emphasis mine)
- Share Your Personal Story: Personal testimony is powerful. Much like the man healed of blindness who simply stated what Jesus had done for him, sharing your personal experience of God's grace is an undeniable account of His work.
- Be Prepared to Answer with Gentleness: Cultivate an understanding of God's Word so you can explain your faith.
1 Peter 3:13-16 NIV Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. (emphasis mine)
- Rely on the Holy Spirit: We do not witness in our own strength. The Holy Spirit provides boldness, wisdom, and the right words when we ask for guidance.
Acts 1:8 NIV But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
