Justification, in theological terms, means "to be declared righteous" or "to be acquitted." It's not about us becoming inherently perfect overnight, but about God declaring us righteous in His sight, not because of what we have done, but because of what Jesus Christ has done for us.
The Problem: Our Unrighteousness
The Bible is clear: all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23 NIV) "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,"
These verses paint a stark picture of our inability to earn our salvation through our own efforts. Our "good works," when compared to God's perfect standard, are insufficient.
Isaiah 64:6 NIV All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. (emphasis mine)
The Solution: Justification Through Christ
The good news is that God, in His immense love and mercy, provided a way for us to be justified. This path is not through our works, but through faith in Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:24 NIV "and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."
Romans 5:1 NIV "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,"
These scriptures highlight that justification is a gift received by grace through faith. It's not something we earn, but something God freely gives to those who believe in Jesus and His atoning sacrifice on the cross.
What Does Justification Mean for Us?
Declared Righteous
When we are justified, God sees us as righteous, not because of our own merit, but because Christ's righteousness is imputed to us. It's like a judge declaring an innocent verdict because someone else paid the penalty for the crime.
2 Corinthians 5:20-21 NIV [20] We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. [21] God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (emphasis mine)
Peace with God
The hostility between a holy God and sinful humanity is removed. We are no longer alienated but reconciled.
Romans 5:1 NIV Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
New Relationship
We enter into a right relationship with God, no longer under condemnation but embraced as His children.
Romans 8:1-4 NIV [1] Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, [2] because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. [3] For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, [4] in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (emphasis mine)
Security in Salvation
Our salvation is secure because it rests on God's unchanging character and Christ's perfect work, not on our fluctuating performance.
John 10:28-29 NIV [28] I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. [29] My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
Romans 8:38-39 NIV [38] For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, [39] neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 2:8-10 NIV [8] For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— [9] not by works, so that no one can boast. [10] For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Living in Justification
Understanding justification isn't about a theological concept; it's about transforming how we live. It frees us from the burden of trying to earn God's favor and empowers us to live out of gratitude and love. While our justification is a one-time declaration, living a life that reflects this truth is a continuous journey.
Embrace the incredible gift of justification today. Rest in the finished work of Christ and live in the freedom and peace that comes from being declared righteous by a loving God.
