The Gospels paint a picture of a Jesus who was never in a hurry. He took time to rest, to connect with nature, and to build deep relationships. He prioritized people over tasks, and quality over quantity. His unhurried demeanor stands in stark contrast to our frenetic existence.
Here is an example:
John 11:1-7 NIV [1] Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. [2] (This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.) [3] So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” [4] When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” [5] Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. [6] So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, [7] and then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” (emphasis mine)
When Lazarus, a beloved friend of Jesus, was sick, Jesus deliberately waited before going to Bethany. Then when He decided to go to Judea in response to Mary and Martha’s message Jesus calmly responded,
John 11:14-15 NIV[14] So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, [15] and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”
Jesus exhibited His complete trust in God's timing and His ability to remain calm even in the face of challenging circumstances.
Here's another example of Jesus staying calm and not rushing.
Mark 4:35-41 NIV [35] That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” [36] Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. [37] A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. [38] Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” [39] He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. [40] He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” [41] They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
While the disciples were terrified and overwhelmed by the storm, Jesus was asleep. When they woke him, he calmed the storm with a simple command. This passage highlights Jesus' trust in God and his ability to remain calm in the midst of chaos. It's a reminder that even in the midst of life's storms, we can find peace and trust in God's presence.
Why is it important to imitate Jesus' pace?
- Presence and Mindfulness: Rushing through life prevents us from being fully present in the moment. By slowing down, we cultivate a greater awareness of our surroundings, our emotions, and the people around us. This mindfulness allows us to connect more deeply with God and others.
- Reduced Stress: Our hurried lifestyles contribute significantly to stress-related illnesses. Taking time to rest and recharge is essential for our physical and mental well-being. Jesus' example reminds us that it's okay to prioritize self-care.
- Deeper Relationships: Building meaningful connections requires time and attention. When we're constantly rushing, we sacrifice the quality of our relationships. By slowing down, we create space for genuine conversation, empathy, and love.
- Spiritual Growth: Spiritual growth is a gradual process that requires contemplation and reflection. In the busyness of life, it's easy to neglect our spiritual lives. By following Jesus' example, we can cultivate a deeper connection with God.
Of course, there are times when urgency is necessary. Emergencies arise, and deadlines must be met. However, it's important to distinguish between genuine urgency and the constant pressure we put on ourselves.
How can we incorporate more of Jesus' unhurried pace into our lives?
- Prioritize: Identify what truly matters and focus on those things. Let go of unnecessary commitments and distractions.
- Schedule Rest: Make time for relaxation and rejuvenation. This could include activities like meditation, prayer, spending time in nature, or simply doing nothing.
- Be Present: When you're with someone, give them your full attention. Put away your phone and be truly engaged in the conversation.
- Practice Gratitude: Focusing on the blessings in your life can help shift your perspective and reduce stress.
Embracing a slower pace may seem counterintuitive in our fast-paced world, but the rewards are immeasurable. By following Jesus' example, we can find greater peace, joy, and fulfillment. By imitating Jesus' unhurried demeanor, we can find a deeper sense of peace and purpose in our own lives.
