It's easy to confuse activity with growth. Attending every church event, reading your Bible daily, or serving on a committee are all commendable actions, but the true measure of spiritual maturity isn't in what you do, but in who you are becoming and the fruit your life produces.
What Does Christian Growth Look Like?
Spiritual growth is often subtle, like a seed maturing beneath the soil. It's reflected in several key areas:
- Increasing Love for God and Others: This is the ultimate test of our faith. Are you more patient, forgiving, and selfless than you were a year ago?
John 13:34-35 NIV[34] “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. [35] By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
- Growing Hunger for God's Word: A growing Christian sees the Bible not as a duty, but as a lifeline—the very guidance we need to align our priorities with God's will. Do you find yourself desiring time in scripture and prayer?
1 Peter 2:2-3 NIV [2] Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, [3] now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
- Freedom from the Hold of Sin: Spiritual growth is demonstrated by a decreasing hold of sin in your life. This means you become more sensitive to sin's presence and are quicker to repent and turn back to God. As the Holy Spirit empowers you to choose righteousness, the old, limiting habits of your "old self" loosen their grip.
Galatians 5:22-25 NIV [22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. [24] Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. [25] Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
How to Nurture Your Growth
Maintaining a strong foundation in faith requires intentional, consistent effort:
- Prioritize Consistent Time with God: Make prayer and reading the Word non-negotiable. This is where your strength is renewed.
- Embrace Community: You were not meant to grow alone. Authentic fellowship provides accountability, encouragement, and instruction.
- Humbly Seek and Apply Guidance: Be open to correction from the Holy Spirit, from Scripture, and from trusted, mature believers. Growth often happens in the painful moment when our pride is humbled.
