It can be difficult to admit when anxiety creeps in during seasons of spiritual growth. When we know what the Bible instructs about faith and trust, acknowledging our hesitation feels almost like a spiritual short-coming. It prompts honest self-reflection: Is this lingering concern a reflection of my faith? Am I holding back because I am hesitant to surrender full control to God? Why is it so hard to let go when I know He holds the future?
If you have ever felt this tension when facing transition or stepping into a new ministry role, you are not alone.
Is Worrying a Sign of a Deeper Issue?
Worry often takes root when our focus shifts from God’s infinite capacity to our own human limitations. Attempting to manage outcomes that belong entirely in His domain naturally creates internal pressure.
Experiencing concern does not mean your foundation is broken. Throughout Scripture, faithful individuals navigated profound uncertainty. The critical distinction lies in how we process that anxiety—whether we allow it to isolate us or let it prompt us to seek God’s presence.
The Scriptures instruct us not to remain trapped in anxiety, but instead to bring every concern to God through prayer and thanksgiving. In return, His peace—which goes beyond natural human comprehension—guards our hearts and minds.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:4-7 NIV (emphasis mine)
Unpacking the Fear of Full Surrender
True surrender is rarely a single, permanent event; it is an ongoing daily choice. When God leads a community into uncharted territory, releasing control means giving up our reliance on personal predictability and comfort.
Reluctance to fully surrender often stems from anticipating what might happen if events do not align with our expectations. Yet God’s plan relies on His perfect knowledge rather than our limited vision.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”- Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
When we acknowledge Him in every step, He directs our path.
Seeking Divine Help to Move Forward
Overcoming persistent worry is not a task we accomplish through willpower alone—it requires God's grace and direct intervention. Honest acknowledgment of our struggle is often the first step toward experiencing His strength.
- Reframe thoughts into prayers: Whenever an anxious thought arises, intentionally convert it into a prayer of surrender.
- Remember past faithfulness: Take time to reflect on previous seasons where God provided guidance and stability.
- Focus on today: Concentrate on faithful execution in the present moment rather than solving potential problems in the distant future.
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. - 1 Peter 5:6-7 NIV
A Prayer for Moving Forward
Heavenly Father, I admit that my heart carries concern as we step into this new season. Forgive me for holding onto burdens that belong in Your hands. Help me release the need for total control and place complete confidence in Your purpose for our church. Fill my mind with Your peace, and sustain my trust day by day. Amen.
