Right in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus drops a truth bomb that pulls us right out of that routine. He gives us a simple, beautiful reminder of who we actually are and why we’re here:
Matthew 5:14-16 NIV[14] “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. [15] Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. [16] In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
These three short verses give us a direct, practical roadmap for aligning our daily life with God's heart. Here are three quick takeaways from this passage.
You Don't Have to Earn It—You Are Light
Notice Jesus doesn't say, "Try really hard to become light one day if you work at it." He says, "You are the light of the world."
This isn't a reward you unlock after years of being a model Christian. It’s an identity given to you through faith right now. Light doesn't sit around stressing about how to illuminate a room; it just shines because of what it is. When our lives are grounded in Him, that light naturally leaks out into our everyday conversations and choices.
Hiding Just Doesn't Make Sense
Think about placing a thick blanket or a bowl over a bright lamp. It completely misses the point, right? A lamp’s whole job is to help people see where they’re going.
Yet, so many of us default to laying low. Maybe we shrink back out of fear of judgment, or maybe life just feels too noisy to bother speaking up. But laying low works directly against the purpose God designed for us. Living out His will takes a bit of quiet courage and a daily willingness to step up, even when it feels a little inconvenient.
Keep the Spotlight on Him
When Jesus talks about letting people see our "good deeds," He isn't encouraging us to show off or collect applause. The very next line tells us why we do it: "...that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Real faith isn't about putting on a show. It’s found in the quiet stuff: genuine kindness, taking time to listen, showing patience when you’re annoyed, and offering help without being asked. When our priorities align with God's will, people notice something different about us—not because we're special, but because the light points straight back to the One who gave it to us.
A Few Questions to Take with You Today
Staying connected to God is a daily process, not a one-and-done event. As you move through your week, take a moment to ask yourself:
- Where am I hiding? Is there an area in my life—at work, with friends, or at home—where I've put a cover over my faith?
- What's motivating me? When I do something kind, am I looking for a "thank you," or am I trying to share God's love?
- How can I shine today? What is one small, simple act of kindness I can do for someone before the day ends?
Shining doesn't require a microphone or a platform—just an open heart and a willingness to be used right where you are.
