I write about it, I teach it, I preach it, and I talk about it every chance I get: salvation is eternal. When God saves you, you are saved for good. The theological term is "the perseverance of the saints," but many of us know it simply as once saved, always saved.
Yet, whenever this truth is proclaimed, a common objection arises: "If salvation is permanent, doesn't that just give people a free pass to sin however they want?"
The short answer is no. Eternal security is not a license to sin—it is the very foundation that frees us to live for God.
The Promise: You Are Secure in God’s Hands
Our assurance of salvation does not depend on our ability to hold onto God; it depends on His promise to hold onto us. When Jesus saves you, He seals you with the Holy Spirit and wraps His hands around your life.
"I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand." — John 10:28–29
Notice the word Jesus uses: eternal. Not temporary, not conditional on your best days, but eternal. Plus:
Romans 8:38-39 NIV For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The Purpose: Grace Sanctifies, It Doesn't Sanction Sin
So how do we answer the charge that eternal security encourages reckless living?
Romans 6:1-2 NIV What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
Grace is not an excuse to continue sinning; grace is the power that transforms your desires. When God saves you, He doesn't just change your destination—He changes your heart. This ongoing process of being made holy is called sanctification.
Titus 2:11-12 NIV For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
When you truly understand how deeply loved and secured you are, your response isn't "Great, I can sin now!" Your response is worship, gratitude, and a desire to walk in holiness.
Defeating the Guilt of the Enemy When You Fall
Here is where the enemy tries to weaponize grace against us. We are secure, yet we are still human. We live in a broken world, and there are times when we slip, stumble, and fall into sin.
When that happens, Satan immediately whispers his lies:
Satan wants to crush you under the weight of guilt and condemnation. But scripture draws a clear line between the condemnation of the enemy and the conviction of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:1-2 NIV Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
When you fall, Jesus doesn't let go of your hand. Instead, He invites you to confess, receive forgiveness, and keep walking:
1 John 2:1-2 NIV My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Rest in His Hands
If you’ve slipped up today, do not listen to the enemy’s lies. God's hold on you is stronger than your fall. He loves you, He is actively sanctifying you, and when He has you, He will never let you go.
Stand on the truth of His Word, reject the guilt, confess your heart to Him, and walk forward in the freedom of His eternal grace.
